Im a total noob to this stuff but always wondered how a website like bestfightodds makes money? They get a lot of views but I don't see any adds.
Am i missing something? Probably so any guesses on what that site makes a month if it had 100k views and where does the money come from?

Anyone venture a guess on how much a poker assist site like opr makes a month?

BestFightOdds is an affiliate for gambling sites. Whenever you click a link to a site like "5dimes" or "Bovada" on BFO, there's a link with a token on it and whenever someone signs up or places a bet for that site with the token BFO gets a cut/commission.

Well, that is just plain bad advice. Meta tags definitely have a place in SEO. I use them.

As another poster mentioned, bestfightodds is an affiliate marketer and earns a commission from referring players to sports books.

If the "opr" you mentioned is Online Poke Report, the answer is the same. OPR is also an online poker/gambling affiliate, though only in a select few regulated markets.

I too am in this business.

Most unfamiliar with SEO use meta-tags as a synonym for meta-descriptions, which are relatively worthless for SEO and not a ranking factor. Improving CTR is about the only benefit and even then, Google will often pick their own description.

Yeah, a title tag is considered a meta tag, as is robots, both of which are supremely important. Perhaps I incorrectly assumed he was referring to his descriptions only, although again, I rarely hear people call their robots tag or page titles a "meta-tag" or anything other than robots or titles.

I agree with your assumption that many people misunderstand meta-descriptions.

I think you do too.

Using a better meta-description, and you are right they aren't always showed, leads to better CTR. Better CTR leads to higher rankings. Conversely, a lower than expected CTR can lead to demoted rankings.

Also better CTR almost always translates into more sales, which is ultimately what SEO aims for... so

The poster was asking general questions about launching an SEO campaign and clearly not a nuanced digital marketer. Even if meta-descriptions influenced rankings to some extent, they'd pale in comparison to bigger things, which is what I was trying to convey to him before wasting money.

Regardless, you're describing what would be an indirect ranking factor, which isn't what I'd call "SEO." It'd be like saying creating a viral video is "SEO" because it results in hundreds of links. No, creating a viral video is worthless to SEO; getting solid links is. But part of your content strategy could be creating a viral video in a focus to drive links.

Either way, I mentioned initially their benefit would be increased CTR, which can indirectly help w/ SEO in many ways. And those are likely the ways that trick people like you into thinking CTR does anything worth spending time on. But despite what you're saying, meta-descriptions are not a ranking factor. It never has been. It can influence your personal results to serve you better content, but doesn't move the needle across the board.

The idea a company like Google would rate such a silly metric highly enough to manipulate to achieve significant results is hilarious. And again, even if it were a direct ranking factor, it'd be so ****ing low on the totem pole that my initial statement is still perfectly fine.

I'm looking for a platform to to set up a website for a beginner. My main product will be an email paid subscription. I have the domain already. A cookie cutter type platform to build a site is all I need.

I don't want to do any or a lot of coding as I just have limited HTML experience. I've heard of WIX and I understand it's simple. Or Wordpress is no coding now too? I just tried Godaddy and you can't change the template after you select one. I'm also looking for a trusted email subscription site. I know Mail Chimp has been around a long time and that is the kind of thing I'm looking for. A name I can 100% trust myself based on their longevity and that the customer will recognize or be comfortable using.

Anybody have any recent experience with or even suggestions on basic website building sites? Paid email subscriptions?

Wordpress is probably one of the most straightforward ways without unnecessary monthly subscriptions. If you need drag and drop versus a theme elementor pro is fine.

If you really need a drag and drop editor and don't want wordpress wix, convertri, clickfunnels, and many others would all be fine options, but you're likely paying for more than what you need.

Not sure what's all available but Mail Chimp has a free landing page tier with a drag & drop builder. And while it's probably a little overkill for what your looking for right now systeme.io will get done what you want to do but also give you the entire sales funnel as well, so you might want to look into it.

Thanks for the tips. I've been thinking of just trying wordpress. I have done some basic and copy paste html on the old blogger platform. If Wordpress is too much for me I will just do wix probably. I'm deciding between Constant Contact or Mail Chimp at the moment for emails. That System.io looks good too

+1 to WordPress. There is a plugin for literally everything you'll ever want and tons of cheap developers who specialize in WordPress (both for custom coding, design, theme builds, etc.). Use Upwork to outsource if you need it, but there's a million guides to learn whatever. WordPress is great.

Well for what you're looking for, just about anything would work. And building up some skills in WordPress will give you a degree of autonomy down the road. But all that considered, I'll still advise to stick with one platform for whole thing. Along those lines here's another you might want to take a look at: https://www.getresponse.com/pricing/free
