I think of Oil of Oley when I hear Oleum Flammae.

I liked Incendia but that might convey too much heat especially if the product only picks up a hint of the habenero's heat. A good brand name will excite the customer but also not lead to unrealistic expectations about the product. If the product really isn't very spicey don't have a name which conveys it is really spicey. The customer will be let down and associate that let down with your otherwise good product.

Maybe the way to go is to name the flavor. Have a broad name like "Dr. Nice's infused olive oil" and then have a flavor name "Hint of Habenero"(I'd go with something else besides "Dr. Nice" cause it sounds snake oiley - just using it as an example)

If you are successful, and you should be planning as if you will be, then you will want a brand name which facilitates expanding your product line. If people like your "hint of habenero" oil when "toasted garlic" comes out....they will buy that too.

Another thing that might help is tinting the color of the oil. Tinted oil in a cool bottle with a cool label would eye pop off the shelf. Go look at micro brews and barbecue sauces. I had a freind launch a barbeque sauce business and it didn't do well...I blame it on his labeling(amoung other things) and not the quality of the sauce(I advised him against going cheap on the label).

Re: My new business

drnice,

something with "kick" might be better than something with "fire" or whatever. kick prob doesnt sound very badass in latin though. although i do think products like these could benefit from taking pride in their local terroir anyway instead of the huge ****ing heap of brands that try to sound mediterranean. it's a bit like naming your restaurant "Le Gourmet" and excepting heaps of customers.

i certainly don't associate habaneros with the mediterranean, and particularly if you want to expand, i think appealing to the californian terroir is a better bet...

If I go with Latin I'd like to keep the entire name Latin. Also, I would consider the other Latin words for flame but they are less recognizable to people who speak only English or Spanish (my primary market in so-cal).
I think it's to much. I'm struggling to read that and I certainly don't know what oleum would mean, I can guess flammae. I like stu's idea with having a brand name and product name. Especially if you plan on rolling out other types of oil.

Re: My new business

Like others said, change color of page.. White is ugly space

Pictures of the bottle, pictures of foods, bread ect

Dont spend a lot on the website until later, just change it a little to suit it better

Spend money on advertising

Cold call, run around to some businesses and provide samples

Re: My new business

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep all of that info in mind while we debate more about the name.

One note on the spiciness, there is just too much variance in people's perception of what is spicy. I had breakfast with some physicians yesterday, and I brought some bottles to give to them and we all had some of it on our bagels. One of the physicians thought it was extremely hot. The other thought it was amazing and took a few bottles home for his son who is apparently a chef. It just seems that no matter what I "claim" on the label, it isn't going to match even half of the population's actual perception.

Re: My new business

Made some quick updates to the website, in an attempt to take care of some of the major concerns that everyone voiced about how ugly it was.

I still kind of think it is ugly but, it is better than before.

Still haven't finalized a name, I'm starting to feel a little turned off by anything that has "fire" or "flame" in it. I don't want it to sound like a gimmick.

Re: My new business

I agree with what others have said about the website. It looks amateurish. Try maybe some template out there. They are cheap and some of them look pretty good. This is what I did and I don't know crap about designing websites. Also If you are wanting to sell on the web try getting your product on other websites. Especially some type of gourmet/foodie ones. Try coming up with some type of specialty recipe that uses your product and get that recipe out there. Are there specialty stores near where it is made? Like a regional chain? That may be easier to get your product into than a national one. If you do that then you can do demos of your product on weekends to drive some interest in your oil. Also I would look at changing the name. Try something more descriptive.

Re: My new business

I am relatively obsessed with olive oil and have about 20 different bottles in my kitchen at any given time.

I'd be happy to buy a couple of bottles, try them, and review them on here if you'd like (could care less about labels).

Re: My new business

General thoughts on the web site...

1.) Where are the pictures? A site like this should have a ton of pictures that make me hungry and want to taste your product.

2.) Recipes.

3.) I don't really get where SVO is coming from.

4.) Font is a little too big on the main page's "Habanero... Oil" title

Overall I thought the site wasn't great but that everyone else was maybe a little harsh. This is the type of thing I would expect to buy from a producer with a B&M presence but no web site or a really lousy one.

Re: My new business

I personally think that the template on Shopify can be pretty good when done well. Are you using the solo theme?: http://solo.myshopify.com/

I like it the way they have it personally and I would just stick with their standard fonts, etc. I agree that you need more pictures asap.

Also, you can't worry about trying to please everyone with the spicyness/taste. Just get it in the hands of people like cts who are obsessed with olive oil.

Ideally, you'd want your brand name to convey a general expectation of experience, while the product name adds specificity. Maybe something like:

Brand Name:

Zeste'
Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Product Name:

Habanero Zeste'
Habanero pepper infused extra virgin olive oil

Where is the button I press when I agree with everything about this post.

Actually, number 1 is key. Seriously, before I even opened the website I thought "alright, I'll help a guy out and probably buy this since I enjoy gourmet olive oils". Saw no pictures, nothing enticing and changed my mind.

Throw up a picture of the stuff being made, a jar of the stuff, some fresh habanero's, a recipe, and some enticing dish made with the stuff and I will buy from you 100%.

(PM me if I don't check this thread)

Once bought you can expect me to review it here.

i'd get rid of the blog link until it's live. it's very frustrating to click on a link and get a "coming soon" message.

Re: My new business

Theres a new shop in my town that sells just olive oil and vinegar and as CTS is the example there are people that are really in the market for it, so i think your idea and niche market is great and has huge potential. The site just looks bland and doesn't put me in olive oil heaven when i first see it, a good design can go a long way show some colors some food.

I think a monthly olive oil club would be pretty cool too. have user reviews on the site.
