Is this illegal or a free tax credit loophole?

Just read this article. It claims that Chevy announced a 60 day money back guarantee on their vehicles including their Chevy Volts, which qualify for a $7,500 tax credit. So if you buy a Volt then return it 60 days later do you get to claim the tax credit?

I don't think I would be scummy enough to do this. But is this a free $7,500?

Tax experts please chime in. And if there are any scumbags who take advantage of this I accept donations on paypal.

Form 8936 has this requirement:

Quote:
You acquired the vehicle for use or to lease to others, and not for resale
which seems to be an out for the IRS.

My guess is that they void the sale... so you can't take the tax credit. I'd love to hear some lawyers opinion on this though.

I went to Target to return a $20 item recently. They took down all sorts of information from me.

Do you really think it's that easy to just return a car and get your money back? To return a car, there's probably a 50 page fine print document that screws you in 100 different ways.

They're car salesmen, dude.

There is really no way this works.

You could probably rig a scam where a car salesman "sells" you a car and buys it right back soon after for the same price. Then split the savings in whatever way.

I'd be surprised if there was any scenario like this that is legal.

Car salesmen have virtually no authority at dealerships. It's not their cars to sell at prices they feel like, and it's not their dealerships to buy cars at prices they feel like.
