I dont think he was intending for retailers to use it. its akin to mint.com, where you snap all your receipts throughout the day, and it will track your finances etc for you, for free. Then OPs co, turns around and sells the data to retailers for targeted ads. Which isn't a bad model. there is a **** load of money in retail mining:

The friction will be whether someone wants to take a picture of all their receipts, and I do not think most will. I for one, dont even get a receipt anymore, and export my data directly from my bank account if I want to run some numbers.

I do think that finding funding etc, is kind of ridiculous at this point though, being as they should be focused solely on developing the product, and testing w/ live customers.
