Profitable is a very low bar to set. Plus, they certainly will be profitable for a few more years until either advertisers wise up or FB does something to change their business model.

My guess is they are smart enough to change their business model to remain profitable, though. This current business model does not justify anywhere close to their valuation. It basically comes down to how much do you trust they'll figure something else out. They have a ton of talent and innovation, so I certainly wouldn't want to bet against that part. But it comes down to backing the talent they have rather than the business model/history they have.

Why should he have dressed better for the meetings? If he feels comfortable in a hoodie at a meeting so be it. Talking about clothes is very lol and irrelevant to everything.

I'm just saying there is some purpose towards dressing nicer when going to a meeting where you are trying to impress other people. If he wants to wear a hoodie, it's well within his right, but those meetings were about presenting himself. If you want to argue that he should have dressed up a bit, I won't argue.

His wedding has nothing to do with anyone except him and his wife. Most of the guests were totally casual because they thought they were coming to a graduation party. It was in his back yard. There's just nothing there that we have any business to criticize. For all we know his wife told him to unbutton the damn thing because she liked it. It just doesn't matter.

Then pick a profit number and lets start negotiating.

You said their profits are a "temporary illusion" and that they were built on "classic ponzi-scheme like revenue."

Re: Facebook ipo

it's almost like people didn't learn their lesson from the myspace flop. social networks come and go. consumer confidence in FB is astounding to me.

Re: Facebook ipo

I by no means think Facebook is a buy at it's current valuation...

But I really don't think MySpace is a very good example to point to in regards to how Facebook will do going forward. You're comparing a business model that revolved around marketing to 13 year old girls, who had essentially 0 customer base outside of them, to a much bigger, much more mature, much more thought out general concept that people of all ages can use even from work. They aren't the same company just because they were both social media sites.

Whether they figure out how to monetize the site to earn it's current valuation is up in the air, but there's no doubt in my mind at all that Facebook will stick around in some capacity.

Re: Facebook ipo

I think timeline is a good example of social network **** uppery that myspace was famous for. I haven't met a single person that likes it, and unlike all the other changes people have bitched about over the years, this is one that seriously clutters the page and makes it harder to navigate. It really reminds me of the same crappy site layout that myspace had. It's just a bad sign to me of what may be to come. Seriously, timeline's the best they can do? I would not touch FB with a 10 foot pole, I love the site and what it's done to bring people together, but as a moneymaker, I just don't see it and I don't have a lot of confidence in their designers to make the necessary changes.

I am by no means an investor and more a casual observer of the market but a share that's valued at over 100 times profit/per share is just LOL to me and I don't understand why big players are chomping at the bit to get at it.

edit: i also bring up myspace because it's an excellent example of overconfidence and paying way, way, way too much for something

Re: Facebook ipo

Facebook is well entrenched. Google tried to take them on and has basically failed to have any meaningful impact whatsoever. If Google can't take bites out of FB it seems less likely something else will come along any time soon

awesome, now we can add fashion to the list of things highpsiguy doesn't have a clue about. 4 in hand is absolutely the correct knot for that tie. it would look terrible with a full windsor.
