BAT ICO,

They're valuing your Eth @ 155, which was where it was a few days ago..seems pretty scummy to not take the Market Price at time of ICO or even few hours out of it. Not going anywhere near that one until it's more clear what they're actually bringing to market...

I really think most of these ICO's are NOT worth the price at all. They seem like a lot of straight gamble in my eyes. Do any of us really need even more volatility? Personally, I'm holding ETH only and no other tokens for now. I expect ETH ratio to continue climbing against BTC (as it has for months, and will continue). I still think we finish this year >>>>$350, especially with Metropolis coming in August. At some point a lot of BTC money later this year will pour into ETH for an additional bump (once again my opinion) so you're much better off holding ETH than speculating on some of these ICO's. They're all so early still.. If I was to buy, I'd rather pay somewhat of a premium in the future for a more developed/more flushed out concept that's being used/roadmap is more proven (possibly say Augur or something, down the road). BTW, Gnosis is so overvalued, I hope no one is in that one.

If I wanted to convert ~$5k BTC into ETH, is opening a coinbase account the quickest/easiest way to do this?

^^ I feel the same way about the ICOs. The risk/reward seems bad vs just holding the ETH.

Whatever exchange you're already on is the quickest. Otherwise yeah, just get verified on whatever one (Coinbase is fine) and go from there.

Is it unwise / costly to use shapeshift.io?

For nominal amount I've never had a problem pre 2017 before I was using a full fledge exchange. I did some calculations at the time and the prices you were getting quoted on were within 0.25% of the actual exchange rate

But an exchange gives you far greater control.

Thoughts on Golem and Augur? Golem brass update incoming and coinbase possibly supporting both in near future, could be some nice returns. I know they are very long term projects though.

Trying to figure out if it's priced in already and the reason for the large run up over the past 2 weeks. I hope not.

I have a couple hundred dollars in REP. I bought it because I'm planning on using it when it comes out since I can't bet on predictit where I'm from.

GNT on the other hand is a big fat joke. Computer power is a commodity these days with razor thin margins. Short term, they are only trying to disrupt the 3D rendering market (which is like 200 million in sales) and I don't see any medium or big sized company trying this cloud computing thing when their data won't be crypted and the only upside for them is to save a few bucks.

OTOH, I like RLC (iExec). They are french with an academic background from Normale Sup. Normale Sup (ENS) is the french MIT. They regularly sprout Fields medals. The guys have been in cloud computing for ever and they have connections to China. Their vision is to make apps to run more complicated code off the main blockchain but still in a trustless way. Right now, a lot of apps cannot be run cost effectively on the blockchain because of the gas cost every time a function runs on the network. Despite that, I feel the risk / reward is still not nearly as a good as simply investing in ETH.

I purchased ETH on coinbase a couple of days ago and it's currently pending.

If I click on the transaction it says "Received ETH +4.0" "+585.80"

But in the notes section of the transaction it says "Bought 4.0000 ETH for $649.07 USD."

Any idea what the difference between the two USD amounts is? Thanks.

ETH seems so absurdly bubbly to me at $210. I get that it's tech is superior to btc in a pretty much every way, but is anyone actually using ETH for anything? I can use BTC to purchase a great many things, make a deposit on many sites, place bets and every exchange supports BTC while the same cannot be said for ETH. Most people are buying BTC in order to buy ETH. Another doubling would cause it to surpass BTC in market cap, but I mean ETH is pretty much worthless in terms of real world usefulness right now. It's market cap should not be > BTC at this point in time or in the upcoming months IMO.

From BAT slack

Quote:
ETH hit 218 today. If we started the sale today, we'd likely raise more than $34M.

This note considers feasible alternatives to how to handle the “overshoot” above $24M target set in USD. To make numbers easy, say we overshoot by 4:3 from $24M to $32M as reckoned based on ETH:USD at end of sale. Non-exhaustive and (note well) non-exclusive list of ideas:

1. Promise to set aside all ETH left after converting enough to USD to hit $24M. Then evaluate options (see below).

2. Promise to develop a blockchain analysis that looks for sends to our sale address, and sends back 1/4 of the ETH sent from each address to our sale address assuming 4:3 overshoot. In other words, a pro-rata return of ETH based on end of sale USD raise to $24M target. Problems: fiat:ETH volatility experienced by people buying in, ETH:USD volatility by us trying to secure $24M USD, sends can fail, sender contract could reject ETH, and risks of building the analysis program that uses etherscan.io.

3. Promise to spend the overshoot on user acquisition by best means, TBD as we go, that are available (BAT, USD, XBox a la Microsoft, sharing with other BAT-enabled apps as specs and rules come up for how to use BAT evolve).

4. Endow a new entity with the overshoot, to further support BAT-enabled apps. We already said that we would work to set up a trade association, so this would be something else. One idea is to create an accelerator or VC fund for attention apps.

--- end of list ---

I think we must do (1) at a minimum. I don’t like the complexity and likely complaints about exchange rate differences/volatility in (2). I like (3) because growth of user base across Brave and future BAT-enabled attention apps is best way to build the ecosystem -- advertisers will come, and publishers after. (4) is possible but needs detailing on governance with respect to the trade association.

This is our current thinking and I wanted to get good-faith comments from BAT slack members. If anyone sees a (5) we missed, or more ideas that are categorically distinct, please raise them. Thanks. Whatever we do I promise we’ll start with (1).

Yeah this has been the biggest news to me.

Hell I think I even asked in one of the 3 coin threads why every alt correlates to BTC... Except ether now apparently.

Also was able to get 3x more ETH than my previous position @160 a couple of days ago. And the GF got a small amount @140.... She already wants to quit her job.. LOL

Well you know, sometimes people buy the hype.

But yeah I agree that currently Bitcoin is more versatile and literally better when it comes to a value store. But we'll see how that works out especially with BIP 148 happening on August 1st. Who knows after that really.

$224 now! If I have a lot of exposure would you recommend selling a smallish % in case of another 25-35% slide?

There are some major event happening. Huobi starting trading tomorrow, Okcoin on Thursday and then in two weeks is the large EEA, Vitalik, Chinese banks etc conference in China. So I can see some nice purchases coming from Asia in the coming weeks.
