Debt Consolidation Company Contacted Me

I have recently gotten in debt when I renovated my coop. It is with Citibank and I have been paying it off and have had no late notices or problems of any kind. About a month or so I got a call from a company claiming to be Citibank personal banking to discuss my loan and asked for banking info. I smelled a rat and went to Citibank's local branch and they assured me that they would not ask for account info over the phone, etc. Now I got a letter from a scammy debt consolidation company saying they could help me with my debt. They did not list my debt specifically just that I probably owe $20,000.

How do they know I am in debt at all if I have not been late with my payments? More importantly, can I stop them from contacting me? Should I be concerned about my credit scores, which have been excellent?

Any advice? I live in the US.

Re: Debt Consolidation Company Contacted Me

It's pretty shocking how much information is out there about us. I would probably subscribe to some credit protection service going forward so you can check your credit periodically and be warned if it changes.

Other than that welcome to the 21st century. I get sent tons of solicitations for all kinds of retarded **** because I'm (probably) on some investment marketing lists.

Yes it sucks and I feel your pain. Anything really scammy you're best off contacting the security people who work for Chase.

make sure your name is on the do not call registry. document when they call, and ask them to remove your name from their database.
they will call you again, because the company banks on the fact that people are too lazy to go through the hassle of filing a complaint. file a complaint.

rinse and repeat.

although it also sounds like they're trying to scam you as opposed to just soliciting business... go here for that:

There's always bad seeds in these places.
someone on the inside steals a bunch of information. Sells it to someone else as leads.
Cold callers use those leads to drum up new business and scam people
also Fwiw, any debt consolidation or credit repair company is s scam in many cases.

The CRA's sell all kinds of info about you unless you opt out.
