Code Year

Codeacademy has released Code Year, a free, yearlong program where you can learn how to code for the web and apps.

I signed up (along with 130K others ATM), and you receive weekly, interactive lessons, with the goal of being proficient by the end of 2012.

I know there are a lot of people in this forum who want to start businesses/etc, so this thread can serve as a place for those who are trying to learn how to code to post updates, questions, etc. over the course of 2012.

Re: Code Year

I signed up. I used to know how to code and in the last year or so I've been learning some languages that don't date back to when computers were coal powered. Teaching someone how to code with 52 lessons seems ambitious / impossible but I'm curious to see where it goes.

Ya that def wasn't there a second ago...I promise, I'm not that dumb.

There was just a large area to type in to tweet/facebook about the site.

Cool link, thx for sharing.

I'm guessing the first Code Year lesson will come this week, although I received an introductory email that said you can go to the codeacademy website to begin immediately.

Re: Code Year

Very cool site, my first thought was about Team Treehouse (formerly Think Vitamin) & Lynda.com, I wonder if this will be bad for them, or just bring them extra demand from people who want to skip ahead fast or something. Supersmart site anyway.

BTW teaching someone to code with 52 lessons doesn't seem that ambitious to me, seems doable (as long as the person is motivated, I'm sure tons of the 140k ppl signed up now will lose interest at some point).

Re: Code Year

BTW if anyone here decides to sign up for Treehouse, as linked by a few people, they have a code for 50% off the first month that they posted in a Redditt thread about them a while ago. Not sure if it still works, but I showed it to someone a few months ago and it did. YMMV: http://www.reddit.com/r/web_design/c...cial_discount/

Re: Code Year

I signed up for code academy and code year love the UI but the lessons were pretty basic for me and Im no hacker (just built a few Google scrapers in PHP). Would there be a good resource for my skill level? Stuff like design learning about OOP, error testing etc that I'm no good at.
