I still love my old blackberry and think this company is under appreciated. However, they're in an industry where hype is everything and now that the "cool factor" is breaking into business, them and msft are in for a world of hurt. Within 5 years they will merge with someone bigger just for the patents and they will be a case study for doe-eyed business school students. I like them as a short along with
Groupon
Amazon
Microsoft

I would love to hear arguments against a short if anyone has them

The main problem with RIMM is being terrible at innovation where innovation is happening rapidly.

The company seems determined to commit suicide but if management starts making better decisions OP will look like a genius. There is also a moderately reasonable chance of someone buying them -- I think Amazon. I actually don't think this is a bad buy.

Buying is the only value, and they do have tangible assets that are close to their value. But what value does Amazon get out of them? Seems like they would scrap a ton of stuff, and just use patents or something else, and the company lives on in name only.

current and recent senior management practically invented an industry. i think apple just became cool. i would much prefer a few blackberry features on my ipad

i do think a ton of companies are a good short due to apple. msft especially. but not necessarily rimm as it's so low already

If you think the problem with RIMM is merely a perception problem, you could be falling into the same trap as their management that led them down this mess.

To take that dominating a position and to blow it shows complete incompetence. They thought they could rest on their laurels and bank, and got out-innovated. It has nothing to do with "cool". It has to do with being 5 years too late to the game, and playing catchup while hemorrhaging money. They blew it. What competent person is going to ride this sinking ship down to the bottom? Everyone with brains already found a lifeboat. Who is going to get them back in the game, and with what money are they going to do it?

Earnings tomorrow after the bell. Expectations are pretty low on a big expense to inventory write down.

Could be some big swings after they announce regardless of what they report vs what is expected. I don't see it being very positive. There is no operating future in RIMM as it is today.

IMO they are going to get pieced out and picked apart as their valuation drops with their business outlook.

Unfortunately in that industry in particular "cool" is everything. The company very well may cease to exist by the end of the year. No one wants their phones, and companies know this also because of the feedback they get from their employees.

I like to buy things when they are cheap, but I don't take chances on investments that have a decent chance of not being there a year from the point I invest. Of course, this is possible with plenty of companies, but RIMM is in deep deep trouble here. They have no products that spark any interest in the general public.

My wife has an iPhone and a blackberry. She literally hates her Blackberry, the only reason she has one is because her work makes her have one, and they are working on dumping them all.

I have a Blackberry Curve on Verizon and love it. I am a heavy work emailer and prefer the real keypads. Also, there is no other phone that can match the battery life as touch screens eat power. That being said I also have an IPad.

It would be interesting to see someone like Msft buy RIM and turn it around.
