Maybe a $0.50 equivalent transaction fee would be good. You buy something at Overstock for $20 but you send $100 to overstock instead and maintain a $80 credit. Overstock likes it because you are likely coming back soon to buy something.
I put in a prediction for bitcoin $2000 next Christmas a week ago here (10/26). I think the main catalyst is people forgot about the last bubble and bitcoin optimism bias. The U.S. housing crisis was in 2008, however the last bubble was severe so I predict the next housing bubble will be around 2028, instead of the average 18-year cycle.
There has been a good ruling in EU where bitcoin is considered a currency. Things don't look good in Russia and Taiwan. But for the last 40 years bank deposit holders have really taken the brunt of central banking, banking, and government. You can read news at:

I am presently downloading the entire blockchain for the fun of it. It is going faster than I expected 2 days. Thus, keeping the current block size will make it possible for the public to use the standard client. People are realizing gold sucks to buy-sell might cost you 30% (including sales taxes in some states) and then you have to worry about protecting it and dodging the fakes.
The question I ask is I have a 60 gb/s connection, it seems it should actually download faster like 1 hour not 2 days. If you use a solid state drive will it download faster? How much faster?
Bitcoin QT First Install - 5400RPM HDD = 3 days to process the block chain - But on a SSD... 17 minutes... I found this
