This bitcoin savings and trust ponzi is pretty amazing. 7% interest each week... what could go wrong? Seems to be millions in that ponzi + its derivatives.

The rate is actually down now or going down soon, I'm not sure. To 5% at the top level I think. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts and how it unravels.

Blockchain.info is not a hosted wallet. It uses clientside JS and is safer than a hosted wallet (which no one should use) and less risky than using one's own computer to host a wallet due to possibility of data corruption and getting hacked themselves (unless you want to run your desktop like a sysadmin at a bank).

Cold storage of coins can be performed with bitaddress.org with addresses generated when offline then printed out, funded and locked in a safe.

Thanks. I did not know that. I just assumed it was another wallet.

http://blockchain.info/charts/blocks-size I guess they added this info too.

This thread discusses how much trust is required to use a blockchain.info wallet. It is certainly possible to get ripped off through server-side javascript code poisoning, but that wallet is very easy to use. The Android/iPhone blockchaininfo wallets do not have this vulnerability if you trust cydia/googleplay, but I like bitcoinspinner for android better.

I'm not sure that I understand exactly how bitcoins work, but I do find the concept fascinating, even if it's a bit before its time.

Once it starts moving this quickly, it has to be a bubble. You have people joining in to make sure they don't miss out on the move. Eventually that runs out of steam, and off we go.

It's not like there it takes a huge amount of trades to move the price that much, and it can easily drop. Obviously overpriced at $14, but Silk Road is definitely looking like a successful venture and floor for the price.

One big announcement leaking can easily change the prospects of bitcoin enough to account for a run-up like this.

Sign up for coinbase ewallet for free 0.1 btc.
Seems that you must use the referral code to get it so use this one https://coinbase.com?r=502e47f68cc721000200454d

Site seems like it gonna be pretty useful since its actually backed by a legit company.

this is a recent paper on silk road:
http://arxiv.org/pdf/1207.7139v1.pdf

it's probably not too informative if you're already familiar with silk road but it contains some estimates on the amount of items sold/btc spent on silk road.

The massive suspected ponzi (once 7% interest WEEKLY) operated by pirate40 is now officially closed. Will be interesting to see this go down: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?to...5957#msg605957

Note that post time in link above was for original announcement but was just edited today.

It's going down like a textbook ponzi scheme and people are still yelling about biting the hand that feeds them to anyone who complains. This is loltastic.

Yeah, that's pretty impressive stuff. Still not enough to justify it's current value, but it is proving that there definitely is a sizable market for it and plenty of room to improve. It will be interesting though, as it grows more, it might become more of a target. But the technology seems very sound.

Price down rapidly after this event. From $15.40 per BTC earlier today to a low of $11.45 thus far with last trade at $11.88. Volume around 149,000 at Mt. Gox.

Gotta sell your coins after you steal them all.

LOL morons who sent this guy money. Scamming might account for more of the Bitcoin economy than even Silk Road. So many naive morons out there looking to get rich quick, and absolutely no way to have any recourse when they fall for it.

There are good reasons for a price increase this time. Here's whats different from last year:

Silk Road is doing 2mil/month

a 10mil company will be releasing the BitcoinCard next year. 5 years of research have gone into this technology allowing a super-low-power credit card sized device to send texts, bitcoins, login info, and consumer data through an ad-hoc network instead of cell towers, at a card cost of only $10-$25

SatoshiDice has shown the potential of the bitcoin gambling market

BitInstant lets you buy bitcoins at walmart, 7-11, and CVS

There are many different bitcoin wallets for android and jailbroken iphones

There is a bitcoin stock market called GLBSE that allows investing in 200 companies with bitcoins

The Ellet is watch style wallet that will enable multiple payment methods and support bitcoin

Coinlab got 500k in venture capital

The Bitcoin Project (the main dev team) has announced that they will make a major announcement next month
