Wow that's one of the dumber personal attacks I've taken on 2p2. (I explained the circumstances around my experience with payday lending... it involved randomly not getting paid by my job (online poker) for 7 weeks.) Keep on trolling dude.

Do you think that the one directed at me was dumber?

At least in this one, you can picture him running like a girl into his room and slamming the door saying "I don't care what you think."

I'm still, over multiple threads, waiting for him to make an actual point. Maybe he'll head over to the Travel forum and tell people that it is quite warm in Costa Rico during the summer months.

But you're a terrible poster who never has anything useful to say... and your posts should be ignored. (That's what I remember of his random attack on you... I'm way too lazy to go look it up)

Apparently I need to be saved from myself because at one point I took out a payday loan rather than hitting up my incredibly ****ed up family for money (which would have opened the door to them asking me for money for the next 5+ years). Never mind that I'm in the very northern reaches of my demographic when it comes to net worth... and never mind that I built that net worth by making financial decisions.

So far I'd say he's not just batting .000 but he should be embarrassing himself. Probably too dumb to be embarrassed though.

Ahhh yes.
The "I Know You Are But What Am I?" tack; a true internet classic.

I note how your posts are always pointless drivel NO NO NO YOURS ARE I'M STILL WAITING FOR YOU TO MAKE A POINT!

One thing that's pointless is this discussion. We have a guy who takes payday advance loans and a clueless, deluded academic. You clowns are one Rabbi short of being a "... walks into a bar" joke.

Quite long on content there. Still waiting, I guess.

Who said I am an academic? I was one, but that was decades ago.

There are two things a person typically does when they lose an argument but don't want to admit it. WM2 just did both of them.

It seems like there is some misinformed information in this thread. Pawnshop rules and rates vary from each municipality. For example, where I live the maximum interest rate is 40% yearly. Lets say the average pawn is $100 and for 1 month. Thats roughly $4 in interest? They will also tack on a storage fee of $5 so that's $9 for a $100 loan. Thats a hell of a deal. Im assuming the people pawning their items cant get a loan near that rate anywhere else.

When it comes to selling merchandise, some people don't want to deal with the hassle of either A) listing it on eBay or B) listing it on craigslist and dealing with potentially dangerous individuals. So the pawnshop charges a premium for that service.

This is the major point that people miss. I buy motorcycles on craigslist and also used parts from dealerships to resell. I negotiate to get the bikes for as cheap as I possibly can. I'm generally buying non running bikes and picking them up. If I pay $100 for a bike that I can part out for $1200 I sleep just fine. Items sit around for months at a time and there's a learning curve on evaluating the condition and value. There's also listing fees, shipping, packing, storage, and of course my time. These are all things a pawn shop must also account for.

I ALWAYS bring extra money because people just want to get rid of stuff. I purchased a bike from a guy who said "you can have all these boxes of parts for $150 also". I saw some nice plastics, so I took a chance and bought them not really knowing if I would even get all my money back. The boxes contained new crash guards I sold for $300 , plastics I sold for $500+ , and around another $500 in misc. This guy was a mechanic who knew what all these parts were, he just wanted them out of his garage. He has called me several times since to buy more parts.

Some people would just prefer to take less money and have their items sold by someone else.

I just came across this forum, and figured some may like to read the small startup article we wrote for Sam's Locker.

Started the store from scratch, and wow has it been fun and interesting working with all types of customers. I'm always up for providing feedback or advice for anyone working at a pawn shop or looking to open one.

You'll probably agree though that it was a mistake to not have a substantial liquid safety net when your livelihood is tied up in something like online poker.

Bad decisions aside the 30$ for a 200 loan doesn't seem unreasonable. They didn't rent out a retail location and hire customer services reps so they could break even on every transaction.

In case OP returns:

What happens if something you bought or took in on pawn turns out to be stolen? The police take it away, who eats the monetary loss?

The guy wanted 100$ for both of them and my boss offered him 75$, needless to say the guy was ecstatic and took the deal. We sold the frying pan guitar on ebay so far for 1200$ and we still have the national guitar with the case. We were told it would be smarter to separate the case and guitar and sell them separate. We've been told that the case could sell for $3000 alone and the guitar for another $2000. We're still waiting for the right offer to walk through the door for that one
Disgusting. I think a lot of the hate for pawnshops, or your specific business practices for that matter, is well deserved after reading stuff like this.

Accepting items that are high probability of being stolen, offering them even lower than asking despite 10x+ margins (and in this case ~82x what you paid).

Someone should make some videos where they go mess with the staff working at pawnshops such as the one OP works at. It would probably do pretty well.

If I had something to sell, I would try and sell it myself first. Only if that didn't work would I go to a pawn shop in Utah. For buying things, pawn shops are good place, but it helps if you have few idea of what things sell for used going in. The price of bargaining room depends on the shop. Just focus on the final price they offer you.
