Great great thread, thank you so much for giving back like this.

Like so many other similar questions I have a few about going from idea to tangible. I keep reading that both speed and desire to actually implement is key. What would you say the first few stages are in the ideas life? What other advice can you share about the early stages? Basically, I know I have a lot of learning to be doing but what are some things everyone at this stage needs to be looking out for before having actual product?

Ill include some generic details about my situation. The idea revolves around what should scale to be a huge database, a key to success is being able to offer the user a streamlined experience with the tools/features we offer. The specific idea is massively scalable yet simplistic, everyone can find use for this site. I have a minor in computer science but haven't coded anything in years. I feel like I am capable of assessing the merits of a technical strategy decision. For example, I have already weighed the pro/cons of whether the database needs track a certain type of information and decided that it does. If I have a technical cofounder who agrees, I just have to believe he will implement all these strategy decisions right? Finding someone you trust seems so important.

What sort of advice would you give to someone who has no financial obstacles and just wanted to implement the idea? If Milo had enough money from day one and you didn't have salary needs, how would the experience have been different? How would Milos implementation timeline and design be different?

Also what has changed in terms of your strategy for Milo. What has changed in terms of your personal strategy / decision making process? Even small changes are interesting to hear. I have belief in this idea and basically feel like as long as I make sure I have a good strategy and lay a solid ground work the idea carries itself. If the idea is that good, how far is this from the truth?

One more, hopefully you don't mind.
I have friends with relevant work experience in informatics, SEO, MSIS, digital marketing and running web ops. Other than bouncing ideas off of them, should I be looking to bring these people in right away? Do I need to sell them and find a way to get them -- do I need all these areas covered asap? What other areas should I cover before I cover those? How realistic is it to think that I can have relevant input to the more refined technical side these guys would cover? Granted, I will be getting to know my idea very well.

I really appreciate any insight!

Just wanted to say I'm making my way through quite a backlog of PMs. I hope to have caught up on them over the next day or so and then I will try to catch up on posts in the thread.

How much cash do you think it would take to get a rock climbing gym started and how long until I see a turn of profit?

If you're up to answering feel free to PM or post..

Assuming you have gotten to at least a reasonable on-page SEO situation, building in bound links (IBL) is way more important than tweaking your on-page SEO. You'll get way more bang for your buck by finding a way to generate a dozen new high quality links from high page rank sites than you ever will by tweaking what keywords are on the page or whether they are bold or not, etc.
Can you give some examples of ways to improve your chances of getting an IBL from a high page rank site? Obviously having great/unique content is a given but how do you get sites to take notice?

Thanks for doing this thread.

+1 to beers in Sydney if you're ever down under

Most insightful thread I've read on here so far, just in a general sense, of going after your dream in our modern day economic climate.

Did you and the co-founders ever have any fear that you would not be able to bring this to market quick enough, before someone either copied or improved upon the concept? I read the part where you guys had to abandon the phone app shopping scan strategy, especially when other players hit the market faster.

"On having his father sit on his board: One of our angel investors, Keith Rabois [who invested in YouTube, Yelp and LinkedIn], decided to join the board. It was the first professional board meeting we'd had together [in 2009]. I was talking about plans and where we're headed, and my dad interrupts me and says, "Whoa, whoa, can you open the website?" [My father] pointed out three or four things that were broken with the site, to the point that the other board members were red and laughing at me. I was undergoing humiliation by my dad. ... I didn't feel great at the time. But these were things that needed to be said."

This quote is so entertaining

Bumping this thread, one of my favourites on 2+2. Would be awesome to get an update from LGAS on what he's up to these days.

Also, here's a recent video of Jack Abraham re: Milo's acquisition.
