If public forums on investing exist they would need an insane number of moderators to keep it from becoming a ****show. This question has been asked before though so you could likely find previous attempts and see if anything was offered then.

http://www.bogleheads.org/ is great.

(It's moderated to a ridiculous extent.)

Corner of Berkshire and Fairfax is solid. One-time fee of $20 to join so it keeps trolls and sh*t away. Value Investors Club is not really a forum like 2+2 but it's great. Membership isn't easy but non-members can view everything on a 45-day delay.

Bogleheads is really good, particularly as you are not a "trader".

any sort of open trading type forum I've encountered has been a mess of idiots, penny stock pump and dumpers and the like.

I agree with those who said Bogleheads. It is exactly what it seems like you're looking for (investing, not trading).

They cover a lot of other personal finance topics there as well that you may find useful.

well, it's not a forum, but meetinvest.com is like a financial social media thing. you can post and discuss things with other users. it's based around long term investing and you can use the stock picking strategies to pick stocks. you can't invest there though. it's only a informative site with a cool stock picking tool.

I went there and picked the first thread that had to do with investing.

The answers are totally horrible.

How does Vanguard shield ETF shareholders from turnover cost?

It's because when you trade the ETF Vanguard is not the contra-party of each transaction, like they are when you trade in the mutual funds. When they are the contra-party, why in the world would they be buying for more than the NAV or selling for less? Their trading should be profitable.

Truly a DUH moment.

I take back what I said above. There are a lot of long-term posters posting good information there.

Probably the best site I've ever seen for investment info.

Bogleheads is really good for passive investing, which is a style I favor. The problem is after a while all questions are answered with:
A. Stick to your asset allocation
B. Stay the course

Both of which are correct but boring. The Wiki's are good and plenty of people are willing to help with asset allocation questions. It is also a good source of info on Social Security if you are close to that.

This is not a forum, but it is a good source of investing info on a multitude of subjects. Scott Burns is a financial columnist for the Dallas Morning News:

Another vote for Bogleheads.

I also like the forums at early-retirement.org and Mr. Money Mustache, though they may be geared more toward lifestyle than investing itself.
