As I recall, people used to say the same about Patrik Antonius early in his career, that he was a former tennis pro. (Note: actor Matthew Perry used to get similar.) And while yes, I'm sure PA was a fine junior player, that's a long, long way away from rightfully earning the description of a pro tennis player.
The ATP website shows Dias for $243 in prize money, all from a smattering of tourneys back when he was still in his teens. Good player to even qualify for those events, sure, but a far cry from being called a pro.
It almost makes sense, however, as we see the opposite happen when it comes to someone having won in poker. Remember that at least one article referred to David Dao, the Kentucky doctor better known for being a piece of United carry-off luggage, as a "professional poker player." All because he had a sizable list of cashes on Hendon Mob.
