Exactly what he said. If somebody is trying to take your job you are going to dig up any negative history you can find on them

Scab is basically a replacement for someone who is on strike (also possibly applies to a lock out as well).

Re: Woman Replacement NFL Official under tough scrutiny due to playing in WSOP

Here's a good article on the risks to players that scab refs pose: http://m.nydailynews.com/1.1132232

Basically, the refs assn is building evidence for their case. When scab refs inevitably screw up, the locked out refs can point and say, "We told you so! The NFL hired a bunch of lingerie bowl-fired-from problem gamblers, what did you expect?"

I do hope the refs get back on the job soon, but I am also kind of excited for football to get more violent for a few weeks.

Thanks. I deleted my post after a few minutes of googling answered my question.

I understand that the refs association has plenty of good reason not to want scab refs coming in, BUT I find it extremely hard to believe that there's not also some sexism at play. I'd be surprised if they actually scrutinized every replacement ref to the degree of finding out that they played in a WSOP before ever officiating. If this was standard, wouldn't it have been news on more than one occasion before? (maybe there have been stories like this in the past?) Or has no replacement ref ever gambled until this one?

edit: I'm ignorant about the history of nfl ref situations like this, and maybe this is actually standard procedure with scabs, but at the very least it seems likely the writers acted differently because of gender (either they wouldn't have written the article at all or wouldn't have written it with the same tone) were it a male replacement.

also, obviously it's sad to see poker get continually **** on

nfl are the most hipocrites league on earth

sports betting on the NFL...Not on our watch

Bounties to injure adversaries...GTFO

Rigged games for big markets for cheaters like the Pats...What? how dare you....

I wouldn't be surprised to learn the NFL is more corrupt then Italia's A league.

The bigger issue here is why are there no pics in this thread?

You want to officiate major sports in the US, you don't gamble.

Kind of sucks but it is what it is.

Keep in mind that when NBC had scheduled the old James Caan series Las Vegas against Monday Night Football, the NFL threw such a hissy fit over it that NBC was forced to reschedule Las Vegas in the Friday Night Death Zone which effectively killed the series.

This issue does not have as much to do with sexism (if at all) as it has to do with the power of the NFL.

That said, it does not make sense for the scab hiring NFL to make it an issue. This is something the union was able to pick up the ball and run with it. Their parents taught them well when it comes to tactics.

What a desperate move by the officials

Funny since probably 50%+ NFL players play poker and I'd guess a good amount of the "regular" officials do the same

Obviously, leagues prohibit officials from wagering on their sport, but it is often OK for them to engage in recreational gambling in non related games.

For example, in puritan, hypocrite USA the NBA used to have draconian rules prohibiting officials from doing any gambling of any kind. Technically, they couldn't even wager a beer on the golf course. However, commissioner David Stern had to admit that the rules were outdated and unrealistic and relaxed them a few years ago.

Yeah, but it's ironic that the other side in this labor dispute, the league, lobbied hard for the UIGEA. In other words, we're getting bashed from both sides.

Re: Woman Replacement NFL Official under tough scrutiny due to playing in WSOP

This is from the NFL Referee Collective Bargaining Agreement (which replacement refs fall under):

"...officials are prohibited during the season (from the preseason through the Pro Bowl) to “enter a horse or dog race track or a gambling casino, or bet on any game, or any other sporting event.” Officials also are required to report to the league within 24 hours any entry into a horse or dog race track or casino during the offseason..."

The question is, when did she sign up to be a replacement ref?
