Two or three decades ago people would had never thought that NLH would be the prominent game of poker played around the world.However poker has not ever been nearly as big as it has become the last decade.
Just thought this would be an interesting topic. Could PLO ever become the next NLH? I am not arguing whether it will gain popularity because it definitely has already. But could it ever surpass NLH years from now when more and more people play it on a normal basis?
You don't see the game nearly as much as one would expect in any casino- and if it is running it is usually only one or two tables. However you always hear people say they like it more.
I feel like the game has a lot of potential to become the new NLH in upcoming years- however is it because of the variance that the game hasn't actually really "taken off" yet in the casual players' pool?

While an affordable entry point will certainly increase the popularity of PLO, it will not increase it enough to surpass NLHE.

"Ever" represents quite a long time...

PLO is far too complex for a beginner to learn. Imagine trying to learn when you're allowed to check/bet/call/raise/fold as someone learning the rules, as well as all the intricacies of how to read your hand in PLO and the pot-limit betting. A beginner can understand 98 on a K76 board; a beginner can't wrap their head around JT87 on a J76 board. For this reason 5-card draw (and NLHE) are the standard beginner poker games to learn, and games as complicated as PLO won't take that spot.

If you can't teach a poker game (like PLO) to your family and friends in 10-15 minutes at a Thanksgiving dinner then it will never grow to the size of NLHE.

I'm assuming the OP isn't counting some variant of PLO sweeping the nation in 62525AD as being relevant to the discussion.

To the Euros in here, is PLO not more popular than NLHE over there? I always thought it was, could easily be mistaken about that, though.

Not in the UK, PLO is still a minority game that shows no sign of growth. NLHE remains the undiputed king of poker variants, and by a very long way.

The game can grow for sure. If a majority of major rooms committed to a .50 / $1 PLO, the game would grow quickly.

I doubt you're going to get anything more than anecdotal accounts, but maybe someone will have some data.

Do people really believe the poker world in 2060 or beyond will be even remotely similar to how it is now? There is decent chance that both games will be as dead (or more likely, deader) as 5 card draw and 7 card stud are today. I shall be sure to play a few thousand hands of PLO in 2060 just to make sure that I am correct today in saying that PLO will be more popular than NLHE at some stage. Put it in your diaries, you are all welcome to play...
