This is obviously not what really happened.
Just a brief time line:
1998: Starts playing poker by joining a $25 live donkament. Wins $250. Loses $250 and several deposits down the line.
2002: Starts playing online regularly. Starts winning.
2003: Grows BR from $20.000 to $80.000 at the end of the year. Travels to play low limit live MTT. First entry in Hendon Mob Database is 11/2003.
2004: Starts playing as high as $50/$100 NLHE heads-up, even though he plays $5/$10 PLO most of the time. BR at the end of the year is $250.000
2005: (Continues winning online and) Goes on a huge tear in high stakes live tournaments, winning $1.5m++ in 5 months.
2006-today: Playing $200/$400 NLHE HU vs bad_ip, Fast_Freddie etc. Continues to play and crush the biggest games, both online and live.
2007: Playing in The Big Game. He didn´t even know about the Game early on, and told himself he would only join the Game if he won $2m more. Later tells a journalist that the one time he was very close to going busto was after losing $1.2m in The Big Game in three days.
2008: Joins Team Full Tilt in June. Proclaims that the chances of him going busto are "zero".
Certainly seems like it took him several years to get to high stakes, let alone nosebleeds. Take away that huge MTT rush in late 2005 and things might have turned out very differently for him.
This whole "never read a book" thing is obviously a myth. He may not have found good books regarding online play early on, but he most certainly never had access to stuff that might have seriously helped his game once he started crushing nosebleeds. This is him in April 2007:
"I haven't really worked on my game that much lately. I used to work so much on improving my game. Even when I wasn't playing, I was playing all the hands, the situations, the players, analyzing everything. Now I'm just basically playing, nothing more. I still have to improve, but I can't complain."
