Haven't read through thread, but two of my favorites are "Vegas Vacation" and "Lost in America" - both for scenes where the patriarch loses everything.

Many in this thread have mentioned a few of my favorites:
• The Gambler (the 1974 version with James Caan; the recent remake with Mark Wahlberg was awful)
• California Split
• Owning Mahowney
• Bad Lieutenant

Since we've bumped this thread, I would add two more recent offerings:
• Mississippi Grind (which is in many ways an homage to both The Gambler and California Split; James Toback has a cameo in it)
• Luck (the short-lived HBO series created by David Milch; the primary setting is the racetrack, but one of the main characters is also a degenerate poker player)

And although it's not about gambling, Requiem for a Dream is an insightful and compelling film about drug and other kinds of addiction.

I put The Runner (1999) in my top 10

I did not see Runner, Runner in the thread (I may have missed it.).

However, both the hero and his father are gambling addicts. John Heard does a good job in a small role as the father, a total degen. Justin Timberlake, as Richie the hero, not so much ....

I liked the movie's overall entertainment value, but its take on gambling seemed to be

1. it is a sin to lose (the father and his bad dad/husband speech), and
2. a sin to cheat (Ben Affleck's Ivan Block, or the Super-Affiliate guy who cheats on his wife), but
3. not a problem to double down and gamble away, so long as you win .... as Richie and his new girlfriend steal the jet to fly off into the Puerto Rica sunset (perhaps bound for Antigua (?) to build up a new operation with the contacts/data swiped along with the jet from Affleck's "Midnight Black" ?)

A decent poker documentary where a few of the characters are pretty degen. I actually thought the filmmaker seemed a bit delusional about his abilities. He ended up making a decent film though.

MTV: True Life "Im a gambler"

The most cringe worthy gambling show I've seen on TV was CNBC's Money Talks. It was a reality show that was an unaware self-lampoon.

They both really show the slippery slope/train wreck in very accurate detail.

Not a screen fiction but easily one of the best (and shortest) books on gambling addiction: Twenty Four Hours in the Life of a Woman (Stefan Zweig). Unbelievable writing and great story over 100 pages.

I watched Premium Rush last night, and though it's only a scene or two in the movie, I was extremely impressed at the villain (Michael Shannon) falling deep into debt to the wrong people losing tens of thousands of dollars in a seedy Chinatown basement playing...pai gow tiles.

Poker, sports betting, horses? Sure. But pai gow tiles? That's a degen deep cut.
