As far as I am concerned, any endeavor where a majority of the people go broke quite often is not a real profession. The few that never go broke can consider themselves fortunate, but playing poker is not a real profession, in the true sense of the word, just like calling someone Doctor if they have an advanced education degree does not make them a Doctor.

The term Poker "Pro" is almost an oxymoron, since a vast majority of those who call themselves that have bad credit and no real family life. That doesn't mean that attempting to play poker for a living is immoral, but it just means that it is not a true profession.

That is why people start threads on here asking questions like how should they explain to people they meet what they do for a living....lol. Then you get a lot of twisted responses in the thread, as people try to fit a square peg into a round hole.

A true profession is one in which, when someone asks what you do, you answer honestly and quickly, because that is what you are, and it is honorable, and you don't lose money doing it.
This post has to be a level, right? I could write 30 pages about how wrong every single line of this post is.

This is quite possibly the dumbest post I've read, and that's saying a lot as I have read a lot in the 'is poker rigged' thread. The only hope is that it's a level, but to what point?

Dentists go broke all the time? As do insurance agents? When someone asks me what I do for a living, I answer honestly and quickly--play poker. I don't go broke, and what I do is as honorable as any other career (I used to work as an NGO worker in disaster zones and war-torn areas, I guess that was more 'honorable'). And being an athlete is not really a profession? LOL, I guess you've never tried to make it as an athlete--they work harder at their craft than most other 'professionals'.

Potleemit, whether your post was a level or not, you need to get a life.

It's on average about 3.50 times the amount you first deposit.

So if you deposit $10, then you'll go broke 35 times.

But yeah, just multiply by 3.50

I have a full time job and I deposit $ 200.00 now and then, play £25 nl or tourneys up to $15, sometimes I run it up to say $1200 and it lasts 6 months, sometimes it doesn't last a day. Been playing for 4 years probably lost $3500 over that time, I just treat it as a hobby with a chance of a bink. Poker has cost me no more than a hobby like fishing or golf. I don't know anybody else who plays online, do these numbers seem usual to people out there???

When I read the thread title I was sure OP was going to ask something stupid,
then I saw he actually put some effort into his post asking a somewhat legitimate question (showed as not-so-much by the best comments itt).

nonetheless, from the majority of answers itt I see that nvg never ever disappoints in expectancy of stupidity

I can relate. This is pretty much what I do also. Would I like to win more? Sure, but I treat it as a hobby and I have fun doing it.

Most real grinders don't really go broke much at all, maybe some very early in their career (like loosing the 50$ in your PS account while living at your parents and having 2$ to your name) which doesn't really count as real busto, or because of life stuff, unless they become alcoholics and gamble away at the pits.

But a lot of the Live players etc... go broke all the time.

Big name pros and sponsored pros go broke all the time because to play the highest stake you have to have the degen in you, and if you don't you won't ever reach the highest stakes so...

they always go broke but it's because of the skill set that make them make money in the first place.

No one is ever completely busto.

We need to break this down into different categories.

1.Need to get a stake busto.

2. Need to get a job busto.

3. Living on the street busto.

Depends on your definition of "poker player", but Levitt study suggests ~3.5

Don't think you can go broke playing poker unless you're maxing out CCs and don't have a steady stream of income not gambling related.
