A friend and I were drinking tonight, playing heads up hold'em. Shuffling was annoying, so we tried to come up with a new game that didn't involve the effort of shuffling. I had nine dice hanging around, so my dumbass invented this. It's fun as ****, and I want you guys to try it. A certain degree of honesty is required for this game, but it's still sick action.

"No Limit Dice Hold'em". You get two dice concealed in a cup. You shake the **** out of your cup while concealing the dice, your opponent does the same. The end result is your "hand". You can lift the cup slightly to peek at your "hole dice". Blinds, bets, etc go as normal for NLHE. Out comes a "flop" of three dice, shaken in the hand of the person with the dealer button. Bettting. Turn one die, betting, turn one die for the river, betting. Best hand wins. Hand rankings go pair, two pair, straight, three of a kind, full house, four of a kind, five of a kind.

As ******ed as it sounds, this game is fun as ****. No prep time - great for two players who don't feel like shuffling. I have NO idea how legitimate strategy works in this game. Any takers?

EDIT: I have no idea where this thread actually belongs. Just please don't move me to "draw and other poker", please. :/

This seems like a very good game. Also the straight < three of a kind is pretty smart.

Almost sounds like Dice With Buddies, with a hold em twist.

A Microgaming skin (don´t know if it was spread all over the network) used to have dice holdem. Cannot remember what was the exact name, but the dynamics were almost the same from what I recall.

I've never heard of anybody playing holdem with dice, but have played something similar to 5 card draw with dice like these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker_dice

Your holdem game actually sounds pretty good though! Will have to give it a try.

Why so? It seems to me that probability of getting straight in a random 5-dice hand is lower than of getting three of a kind. Even if 12356 is a straight, then it's only 5!*6 = 720 combos out of 6^5=7776 compared to 6*(5*4/2) * 5*4 = 1200.

Don't forget that this is a 7-dice game, not 5-dice. But a "straight row" still is harder to get. Here's a simulation:
Code:
kacmint:~/Desktop$ nlh_dice.pl
fivekind : 138
fourkind : 1102
straight : 1707
fullhouse : 2190
strrow : 4094
threekind : 5441
twopair : 7990
onepair : 10000

sounds good. As for trust, no touching the dice, only cup or you can end up with your cup face up and no touching it in anyway there after. The other person should not be able to see it unless they stand up or w/e.

what is the difference between a 'straight row' and a straight?

Straight - 12345 or 23456

Straight row - Any 5 different different numbers (12456, 12356, etc). There's probably a better term for it.

It means that if a1a2a3a4a5 a straightrow if a(n+1)>a(n) with n>0 and n a whole number ( sorry i studied mathematics in French so i don't know if it's the correct word , by whole number i mean ( 0,1,2,3,4,etc... ))

Maybe I'm confused about the rules, but wouldn't only having one pair be impossible on seven dice?

You're playing best five out of seven... I see where you're coming from.

This is exactly why I was hoping to get this game analyzed.

So, according to one of those previous posts... "nothing" should be considered a strong hand in the rankings?
