Ok so we all know how big poker has got ever since moneymaker won the main event, and the emergence of the convenience of online poker, but I was wondering could learning how to play poker successfully and become a winning player actually be a viable college course. What I mean by this is have a 3/4 year course as normal with 6/8 semesters designed to teach students every facet of the game from learning all the mix games along with strategy, game selection, bankroll management, live play, MTT'S, heads up play, sit n'go's etc. Obvisously the standard of poker has now hugely increased but people still make a living out of just playing poker. There is the opinion that a 3/4 year course is not enough and clearly it probably won't be but could a college course along the lines of what I described be attractive to potential players who want to make a living from poker or at least a decent salary per year equilivent to some office job with no freedom. This will probably never ever happen but is it a lost opportunity for an innovative college/university. Any thoughts??

If something can be presented academically, it can be taught at college.

I used to be into internet marketing which is kind of like poker in which everything is essentially self taught and learned through observation. Long story short a few universities started offering internet marketing courses which were a ridiculous waste of money. Everything they taught could be learned in a few months for free on good internet forums and even then it was the most basic of information. The material being taught was presented by your typical professor who has little real world experience and is essentially an idealist in that he has his head so far up his ass that he thinks his theory and methodology was straight from the mouth of his creator. In the real world he wouldn't have cut it and it was painfully obvious to any legitimate internet marketer that if it weren't for academia he would be looking for a job.

Well hey, some uni in the states covered Starcraft as a paper for a semester (and it proved ridiculously popular ldo), so why can't poker be considered? Although people might do the whole religious "don't wanna be a degen, gambling is bad" routine to prevent this from happening.

Obviously I hope this never happens, the last thing poker needs is more smart people...

heres 1 on sports betting...

http://www.casinocitytimes.com/news/...ntentID=145263

Training courses to bet on football games are really no different from classes in the fine art of Chinese cuisine, or at least that's the word out of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Critics are concerned courses like that could compound addiction issues for problem gamblers and the community, and could tarnish the university's image as an institution of higher education and a leader in the field of problem gambling.

However, there is no sign the university will wade any further into programs intended to train individuals how to gamble.

UNLV is again offering a course this fall called Sports Betting: How to Win Betting on Football. The class is scheduled to start Sept. 29.

thats from 2004, wouldnt shock me if they have a "How to win at Poker" course nowadays

Yeah it could.

If you think academically the subjects involved with poker.

1) Mathemathics
2) Psychology
3) General Studies
4) Drama (Maybe)
5) Philosphy

Theres been more absurd (not that this'd be absurd) Bachelor courses at uni then poker such as Bsc (hons) Football Studies w/ Business, French, German, Art, R.E etc etc..

When I taught organizational behavior in a university, I used many poker examples, and the students loved it.

I put myself through college playing poker, my only way to make it with zero parental support and no student loans.

People spend their whole college learning football, baseball, et. al., and only a tiny percentage do it professionally or even as a hobby.

Classes on poker from a good teacher, like me, would fill up at registration.

I just thought of it after reading this thread, so yeah, poker could be thought as a course.

Spoiler:
Now if only it could be taught...
