She knew it would take time for the will stuff to get done (extended family crap), etc., so she just left cash in the box for her friend (no, not me) to take upon her death. I thought it was brilliant and I plan to do the same if I ever get any money.

Possibly not brilliant.
The bank reads the obituaries and would seal the box; the note (if not handwritten or properly witnessed) might have no testamentary effect (depending on her state's law), and the $ might become part of the estate to be divvied up, someday, between the extended family, probate court, IRS, lawyers, etc. This is one of many legitimate reasons why people might not want to use bank safe deposit boxes. Give your money away while you are alive... or use a reliable anonymous vault service (if one exists).

Re: Very bad news - 24/7 Private Vaults in Las Vegas was robbed.
My first time posting, driven by the sad event at 24/7 Private Vaults.
There are many private vaults across America that provide powerful security to their customers. 24/7 does not. For starters, its vault is not UL-Rated, which is an industry standard. Worse, its security system is not monitored by a rated third-party central station. These two items alone render it insufficient, to put it kindly.
Private vaults offer valid and valuable consumer benefits to those who seek them. But like choosing bad lawyers and bad dentists, not doing your homework can lead to bad things.

If I understood him correctly, it sounds like insured basically means that the building is insured. Why do any customers care if he's insured? Seems like it was nothing but an attempt to mislead people who don't bother to make any further enquiries.

lol, what a scumbag if that's true. Shows you how paranoid you have to be nowadays, really seems like everything's a scam...
It's pretty sad but unfortunately necessary to adopt a default attitude of extreme paranoia towards almost everyone and every business/investment opportunity.
Just look at all the scam threads started on these very forums almost on a daily basis. Scary...

Or maybe the money is still there?

That would be hilarious.
All the people criticisng this: Where do you suggest keeping cash? Let's say you cash out for $8,000 at 11pm Saturday night. Just carry it/keep it at home and hope not to get robbed until the bank opens Monday 9AM?

I offer my mattress. It has a guard for about eight hours a night.

In Vegas, you ask the security guard to walk you to your car and you go home. Any B&M casino, get a cage receipt.
If you have an ATM card at Chase or BofA, their ATMs will scan and insta-deposit up to 30 $100 bills at a time.
This happened to me once at a Las Vegas casino (other than where I was staying), and I waited in the casino until daylight and then took a cab.
Before I would use a private vault company it would have to be a buttload of money (which is why this thread is a fantasy for me).

I rarely carry more than $1-2k cash. But that is enough for someone to try and rob me. This is why I always bring mace, knife and glock to my local casino. This makes me feel safer at least.
I also have a home safe and many guns in my house. Gl robbers. Maybe you want to try and find an easier target.
If they read this thread sounds like there's a bunch of em.

Can someone explain to me, when you drill a hole in a safe, how do you get the money out of the hole?

Not professionally speaking ,ahem, but this usually is to remove or trigger the locking mechanism to open the safe. or to put in dynamite if it is a stupid Hollywood script.
