The story of Nick the Greek being cheated by Ray Ryan with binoculars was a well-known story and I "think" the movie used that episode to fictionalize. Marshal Caifano went to prison. According to Witness of Protection folks testimony, he went to Mob biggies requesting that Ray Ryan be killed for testifing against him. I had thought the movie might have rubbed it in on the Mob. Ryan's car was blown up with a massive bomb. There was a large investigation, and later, Witness of Protection folks said Caifano had it done.
As for Doyle, Slim cheating, I never ever heard of either of them cheating except for playing the same bankroll. At hold 'em, that is cheating, but partners just stay out of the same pots. If they both got in there, they'd be putting up two to one money for the third guy. Slim, Sailor, and Doyle would play "top hand" with solid raises and your partners get out of the way. At limit poker, partners are way more deadly, and probably have signals. Any signal your partner can see, the eye-in-the-sky can see. Slim, Doyle, and Sailor had long-term reps as honest road gamblers. Anybody you can cheat, they could beat on the square.
