Whoa! This is sad to hear. He's my favourite amateur to ever appear on HSP. Loved him wandering around not playing any hands, but still telling the table to speed up, and then once he caught aces he shoved. Certainly a character that you remember.
His story is amazing. From the million dollar superbowl bet, to the musuem that was basically a boxcar, to the horrific motorcycle crash, to running for mayor, etc, etc... very sad.
Read the book, "No Limit: The Rise and Fall of Bob Stupak and Las Vegas' Stratosphere Tower" by John L. Smith for a fairly comprehensive account of his life and the Stratosphere. I think Stuey and Sklansky even make brief appearances in the book (but it's been a few years since I read it so I'm not certain).
Although we had not crossed paths much in recent years Bob was a big part of my life for a long time. I will have more to say about that in the coming months. But for now I will just say that he was one of the most unique and interesting individuals I have ever met. My condolences to his family.
This site has some cool old videos. I like the one where he wins a million dollar Super Bowl bet from Little Caesars and collects the money in a cardboard box and McDonald's bag.
Putting up a billboard offering 100K to anyone who caught him smoking was a classic. Stories like that will not quickly pass away. The man was a cult of personality. RIP
