Re: Raymond Davis low blow on Selbst
I'm sure he meant no harm but this interview/thread is another example of how sexist the poker world is. I would hate to be a woman and constantly have to deal with negative sexual attention from guys who think it's funny and can't comprehend how somebody would want to be left alone.
I make much worse comments that this with my close friends and think it's hilarious. People are entitled to joke among themselves and say whatever - that doesn't bother me one bit. But when you take it public and put on a show it's pretty rude and I don't respect people who can't wrap their heads around this simple fact.
Then when a woman stands up for her gender all the guys call her a prude and a bitch and an idiot and say she has no sense of humor. What a ****ing joke.

Would be fun to stake Eskimo in a random $40 daily tournament in Vegas just to sweat out a return incase he somehow won.

Re: Raymond Davis low blow on Selbst
Sad to see how many people think this is OK. Obviously it's not. I'll make the obvious, dangerous, imperfect analogy and point out that if Vanessa had made racial jokes at Raymond's expense, people would have a problem with that.
With luck I'll see a day when, e.g., Jack Effel doesn't think it appropriate to parade Holly Madison around before the Main Event and contribute to the basically sexist and misogynistic culture, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Raymond Davis low blow on Selbst
is it malicious? I don't think so. Is it classless, ignorant, and offensive? most definitely. I'm not a very PC person but it's cringe worthy and not in the slightest bit funny.
my guess is that Davis probably doesn't even know why there is a problem with his comments (not because he's not intelligent just because he doesn't have the right perspective). Nate's post in this thread would probably do the best job of illustrating it to him. Hopefully someone who is friend's with him will take the time to illustrate the point and make such an analogy to him and he might realize/apologize to Vanessa or others he might have offended.

Sad to see people are so emo that they can't take a joke. Go cry me a river, Mr. (or Mrs./Ms.) Outrage At Society's Non-Lameness. I wouldn't have a problem with her making fun of his race at all, because I know the difference between comedy and malicious intent. Some folks want us all to walk on egg shells so they don't get offended. Some folks (those folks) have no sense of humour. No one needs to child-proof society, emo warrior...you need to get thicker skin.
Ahhh, if it's comedy and not serious, it's all good. People get offended at comedy too much...it's just a joke. All laughs are at someone elses expense...think about that long and hard.
And it would be okay if Vanessa said racial jokes back, if they were meant to be funny and not serious. Lisa Lampanelli, the late Patrice O'neal, and many others make a living telling racial jokes, and receiving them. Go listen to some of the best Opie and Anthony shows on race jokes EVER between Nick DiPoalo (Itlalian), Patrice O'Neal (black) and Louis CK (hispanic)...they say things to each other that in another context would be unforgivable! But in comdey it's understood that nothing is off limits, precisely because all laughs are in good fun and ALL laughs are ALWAYS at someone elses expense.
People who get offended at comedy are oversensitive, humourless individuals who take everything way too seriously. It's only funny if it's within certain bounds to them. I can understand being a fan of one type of comedy over another, but to say one type of comedy 'goes too far' is total nonsense. The best comedians push the envelopes of what is acceptable, like George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Joe Rogan, Richard Prior, Patton Oswalt, Lenny Bruce, Sam Kinison, Doug Stanhope the ones I already named, etc. Being "edgey" in comedy makes you one of the greats.
You're not even a star in comedy until you make an entire audience get up and walk out of your show in disgust. In fact, if you can't do that, you're just telling silly jokes. A real comedian has a point of view, thinks for themselves, questions authority, and pushes the envelope in social commentary.
This guy isn't a professional comedian or anything, but he was trying to be funny. You don't even have to succeed in being funny...to get offended at a bad attempt is to say no comedian should test their material on audiences. You're bound to tell bad jokes occasionally...the intention is what matters. If the joke was meant to hurt, it's malicious...if it's meant to entertain and make people laugh, it's non-offensive to the rational person.

Re: Raymond Davis low blow on Selbst
If Greg Raymor said this stuff it would be considered a low blow, but because of Raymond's flamboyant attitude, its not really a low blow

in general I disagree and think your view is wrong and misguided. It's not something I'd be able to convince you of over the internet. I'm not saying what he said was always offensive, but in the context that he said it, based on their relationship (or lack there of), IMO it was.
also fwiw assuming that I am PC because I find what he said offensive is just silly. You can find certain comments inappropriate and still find humor that uses race, gender, or sexual orientation as part of the setup. He's not a comedian, the comments were not funny, and they are expressly about a certain individual that may or may not want to be discussed in such a manner in a public forum. He certainly has first amendment rights to say stupid **** like this, just don't tell me that it's not offensive because he's trying to be funny. It's not funny. It is offensive.
as to my handle it was a nickname given to me and has nothing to do with race nor was it an attempt to mock anyone. I had a friend who was a fan of snoop dogg and liked to say things like snoop would say and that's where he came up with the name. It wasn't in an attempt to mock snoop as he was a huge fan of his, and my use of it as my handle on here was just because it was a nickname of mine.

Re: Raymond Davis low blow on Selbst
I stated earlier that I was surprised to find Raymond Davis so funny. I for some reason watched most of the interview, so was referring to the whole thing in total. The Selbst crack was one of it's least funny parts.
I don't find these comments wholly inappropriate, only given the medium. These interviews have a very limited audience. This one still has <1k views on youtube. I agree that there's a general fog of crassness and depravity that pervades popular culture. However, with so many media options, I think ultimately it's a good thing that there's something out there for everyone. The form of is also pure in this sense. You get (likely) unedited taste of Raymond Davis here, fwiw. If you don't like it, you can choose not to listen to him or QJ in the future. If Raymond were to make a deep main event run, and he spouted this stuff in an ESPN interview, then we got problems.

Re: Raymond Davis low blow on Selbst
If I was Vanessa, I would have smiled and said;' It's so nice that the World Series is open to everyone....even the blacks'. I bet you could have heard a pin drop then and this not so funny imbecile would have not said another word.
