Thanks for posting the article. Loved this story:

Irving, acting all offended, said to Bagels, who was also Jewish, “How could you do that to one of your people?” As he was raking the pot, Bagels looked at him and said, “Your people? C’mon, Irv, you’re the only Jew I know who took Germany, plus the points!”

Sigh, 58. I played w/ Bagels in both of the main Manhattan clubs. A very funny man, quick wit and smart, always fun to play with. When Stud Hi was the game he once said to me: 'How come every time you have a hand I pay you off and every time I have a hand you say 'ok' and fold?' So I answered 'you're a nice guy.' Smoked a lot of weed, he did, and every night he'd invite ppl to go outside using his code phrase 'Would you like to come w/ me to Daven Ma'ariv?' which is the Jewish evening prayer.

He got busted for smoking a J in a men's room at Foxwoods and was pissed off. So we asked him how he could be so stupid to try that and his answer was 'How was I supposed to know there was a security guard in the next stall?'

Heh, good night, Bagels. Nothing but big pots from now on.

Met Joel at a poker game in NYC, had no idea who he was until someone at the table told me about him.

Great guy, good, solid player, loved the waitress with big tits.

RIP

I assume he meant that he was the only Jew to bet on Germany winning the war (as in WWII). This is funny because he was Jewish and playing into the whole Jewish money lender/tightwad/etc trope even at the expense of the destruction of his own people.

I assumed that part, but what does "and the points" mean?

Under dogs have points added, favorites points deducted (it's called 'the line') in order to entice bettors otherwise everyone would bet on the favorite and the bookies would get ruined. To win your team has to 'cover', IOW, win counting the plus or minus points. It's a way of splitting opinion on an outcome to try to bring the betting as close to 50-50 as possible so that the bookie's 10% juice can do it's magic.

That's my best explanation, someone always comes along w/ a better one.

It's a damn funny joke. Today it'd be like saying 'I'm taking Russia over Ukraine, minus Jets and Tanks.'

I played with him several times years ago at Foxwoods in HORSE and OE games. Had no idea he was the inspiration for Knish, but it makes perfect sense now. I always remembered him for his humor and just general niceness at the table.

In one game there was this attractive redhead from NY who thought she was well connected in Manhattan poker circles. She kept trying to give him games to play in the city and every time he'd just smile and say "oh yea, I know so and so. Next time you go tell him you're friends with Bagels, that's what they call me"

RIP

This would shock me, if true. He was a mid stakes limit grinder all the time I knew him. I know in a thread a few years ago someone mentioned they were playing at his table in a mid stakes 0/8 game which would be what I expected.

-----------------

As long as I'm posting this I'd like to mention that Koppelman was/is a decent Stud Hi player. Friendly as well.

Plus I had a thing for Ingrid and she knew it. Couldn't close the deal, not even close.

Bagels never played 200/400. He used to play the $20-$30 stud 8 sng's on stars. The highest he has played in the 6 years I've known him is 30-60. He was a 20-40 Omaha Hilo reg in the NYC games

Here's classic Bagels: He would be your friend as a default and it would take some work to get on his bad side and even his 'bad side' was delivered w/ a laugh and smile.

One day another player got really obnoxious, aggravating everybody. So Bagels tried to settle him down but the other player wouldn't listen and told Bagels to leave if he didn't like it. Bagels answered 'I was thinking of leaving but the rest of us are going to take your money bec you are terrible. I spent a couple of minutes dividing your chips in 7 to see how much my share should be and it's worth it for me to hang around a while.'

He could keep that up all night. Nobody ever lasted long trying to trade insults w/ him.
