The man instrumental in banning online poker in the US, citing 'American values' in the run up to the 2006 UIGEA - is now himself facing a long prison sentence for fraud.

Going to make a bold prediction that student / blackmailer is male.
News says Hastert was only approached by the student (presumably to ask for hush money) in 2010...$3.5M seems like a crazy amount. Dude's 73 yrs old...you don't have a long future in politics to protect. Still think there must be something especially scandalous behind the curtain..

The guy committed bank fraud. The reason doesn't matter. Once they have a case, they are going to move forward.

If there was actual blackmail, law enforcement will get around to it.
