Player request: please hide my account balance from now on. I'm a poker player and want risk in everything I do. It will be a thrill when I try to buy in and see insufficient funds because BRM was impossible. Just think of all the additional deposits Lee!!

That letter is amazing. I actually laughed out loud. I wonder if that's based on any sort of direction from Stars or if the CS staff in Bangladesh just make it up as they go.

This is a compelling question! I encourage others to ask the same question and see if they get similar responses.

Was that a real email from Stars Support? Really? With those words and reasons and everything? Really?

Yes, 100% unedited real reply. For completeness, my initial email was this:

Hi,

I've noticed that in the latest update to the client the rake is no longer immediately visible for tournaments and SNGs. Can you please explain the rationale for this change?

Thanks,
Ike

It's nice that in this safe, corporate world the support team of a major company doesn't feel tied down by content-free, canned responses, and instead can just write whatever random crap pops into their heads.

I just tried, but got a copy/paste of Lee Jones' insulting "arithmetic" explanation.

Hello Thomas,

Thank you for your email.

You are right - the display was indeed changed recently.

You may have noticed that we have changed our tournament lobby to show a single buy-in number (e.g. $33) rather than a “buy-in + fee” format (e.g. “$30 + $3”, or “$25 + $5 + $3” for bounty tournaments). The fact is that the PokerStars client is a great piece of software if you are a regular, experienced online poker player. If you are a newbie or an infrequent recreational player, “$25 + $5 + $3” looks like a pointless arithmetic test.

We are looking for every possible way to make our software friendlier to new players, and to increase transparency. I think we can all agree that:

“$25 is added to the prize pool; $5 is added to the bounty pool; $3 is retained by PokerStars”

Is far clearer and more transparent than “$25 + $5 + $3”, which means little to the uninitiated.

And yes, this information can now be found within the 'Structure' tab of the tournament itself.

We thank you for your feedback an hope that you can understand the reason for this change.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Regards,

Oliver H

Well, is part of the latest changes that we have been deploying.

Since our Stars Rewards program is not a traditional volume-based rakeback program, we don't see as important to display the rake at the tournaments anymore.

Also, we take into consideration our players feedback and sometimes this small changes are precisely the consequence of this feedbacks, however, management has the ultimate word about this.

If you are not happy with the change or you feel it affects you or anything else, please feel free to send your feedback or comments about it and we'll gladly review it.

Please note that under the tournament structure>Tournament Information>Buy-In: you will specified how much is going to the pot and how much is the rake back.

I hope this helps you clarify your doubts, however, please don't hesitate in contact us back should you require further assistance. We aim to please.

I saw the first bit about us not needing to see the rake anymore coming a mile away. Gotta say, though, saying that we ourselves requested this and implying that we're responsible caught me off guard. Hats off to Tatiana (or whoever wrote the original), tough to write parody like this. Perhaps customer service isn't where your calling lies.

It's now v hard to find info about rake on the stars website. But here:

https://www.pokerstars.uk/help/artic...anation/10604/

"The ‘entry fee’ is clearly indicated at time of tournament registration.
For example, a $10 + $1 buy-in tournament includes $10 contributed to the prize pool and $1 is charged as tournament fee for a total of $11 deducted from a player's account balance."

should be changed.

I do kind of understand why it's nice to have the total buyin as one number, clearly displayed. But they could put the breakdown directly underneath it. Instead they hide it in the fine print at the bottom of the last tab, which is exactly the opposite of "transparent".
