Re: pokerroad will die

from an internet marketing perspective the site is layed out wank. Theres no way they are monetizing the traffic they get in a good way and i bet there revenues are poor. At the moment the money they spend creating the content and the site is less then they are getting back in ad revenues if im not mistaken. And these changes are not massively hard to make, they and alot of other poker sites are leaving a ton of money on the table.

BPS was maybe the best podcast out there. I guess that's maybe why it couldn't last. Never missed a single one but since September haven't bothered at all. That and their constant low as hell sound levels just makes it a waste of time.

Having Negreanu might give them a little boost for early '09... we'll see.

please send resume, include a photo so we know what you look like, the photo below was a little blurry

In all seriousness PokerRoad is an impressive operation, good content, great marketing and design teams. The business portion of the company is not easy, I know first hand how hard it can be at times.... I doubt PR will "die" as the OP claims but I think its no secret that poker media its a tough business to be in even when there are celebrity backers. I'm send you and your team my best wishes.

you can do my laundry, open my mail, cook my food and make my bed daily. your salary will be 3 pence a day, a peanut M&M, and one "sketchy" buck. sketchy bucks are exchangable for more M&M's (1 m&M = 10 sketchy bucks).

or you can accept a $300 a year salary, whichever you would prefer.

in this economy you might have to settle for this position. i will accept applications (with cover letter) as well as a urine sample.*

*urine not intended for drug testing purposes

Once I win the ME, I'd be interested in hiring you to follow me around and play sound bites at appropriate times as I go about my daily life.

I think Huff does a decent job at igniting and extending conversations, but losing Bob was huge. Shane can hard to listen to at times.

Its tough to monetize the internets and the PR value proposition has definitely diminished over the past few months.

Re: pokerroad will die

I visit pokerroad every day and listen to BPS, prradio and twojacks. I do agree that pokerroad radio with ali, joe and gavin has lost a bit of it's focus, there is too much wierd goofballing going on and i think it started a while after the WSOP with the shirtroad etc. Two jacks is only getting better and better though.

There's no easy way to get a precise number.

A 50,000 ranking on Alexa and dropping...
Is NOT much...
And the traffic value of 2,000-3,000 unique visitors/day...
Would not be enough to support ** one guy in pyjamas **...
Let alone a site that spends well into 6 figures annually.
The BG Empire claims to have 20 employees...
So that's about 500K/year right there.

Making money with a web site...
IS VERY HARD TO DO...
And PokerRoad is not even close to doing it.

But again...
The point is to raise/maintain BG's profile...
And give him a platform and audience...
Because the guy just lives to be Famous.

Purely based on poker accomplishments...
BG would be an obscure cash game pro...
High stakes yes, but obscure.

A masterful publicity campaign over the last 10 years has made BG into a Rock Star... so PokerRoad will continue to be a loss leader to serve this greater purpose.

Re: pokerroad will die

I would hate to see PR go away. I had some tough financial times the past 2-3 years and I really appreciated having free access to Joe's shows and Rounders. (I have a lot of catching up to do with them on 2+2). Listening to their podcasts literally kept me from losing my mind. I have tried to listen to several other podcasts from other sources but could not get past one or two episodes.

So I do greatly appreciate the work Joe and the guys do at Pokerroad as I also do with Rounders/2+2.

That being said I don't know how much money I bring in as a poker fan? I have been following poker since the boom in 2003 but rarely play and have no interest in playing on the internet. So I guess I have become somebody who is a poker fan much like maybe a football fan. I watch on tv, follow the well known personalities, keep up with the news and read the forums. So I don't know where this makes me fall on the poker tree since I suspect the main goal of a lot of the sites is to get people like me to a pay site to play?

I am not an expert on making money on a content based website like PR but I do admit I find it hard to imagine the profit making potential is very high other then Joe building it up and maybe selling it. I can't imagine he is getting very many people to sign up for online sites through PR?

Of course if online poker ever got "legalized" in the USA then it would be a whole new ballgame.
