Gambling addiction is a disease. That 3-5% of gamblers (the problem ones) have the highest rate of suicide than all of addictions combined. So, if someone becomes sick and ends up in complete financial ruin (which once again is the addiction that has the most dire financial consequences), do you think they deserve to be threatened by criminal action by some **** breaking the law and doing the most immoral thing in the first place.
I understand that illness or other tragedy can't be controlled while choosing to gamble is a choice, however there is no difference between a heroin addiction or gambling, it destroys your life above and beyond.
Finally, we are not talking about personal debts, we are talking about debts to a financial institution who is willing to lend based on your credit history, if you don't pay those debts back, you are already facing grave consequences such as destroyed credit score, lawsuits, liens, job loss and wage assignment. That is not punishment enough?
