One thing we know for sure is the fact that they are indian matters way more than specific traits of the individual.

yes it is very good for world of poker if poker is legalized in india, gambling is huge thing there, but most of it is underground or homegames, u see lot of students , businessman, doctors, lawyers, all kinds of professionals n professional gamblers.Game most popular is rummy, each player is dealt 13 cards n that game does require some skill n ability to gamble, we hear lot of sick stories from people who gamble lot, like some guys bet their cars, their property, some rich farmers have huge acres of fertile lands, so they just bet that, say 1 acre of land might be worth 200k$, they play for that.

Like that huge amount of transactions keep changing hands, most of those r corrupt politicians, celebrities , businessmen n law enforcement get their share of money to stay away from those places.

Poverty is never an issue, those people can neither afford to play nor capable to play, its all about middleclass n those huge deep pockets who gamble a lot

Yes there are a few anomalies, but the general trend is: the richer the people the more they donate...
those numbers are not making any sense.
the amount lost by losers>>>> amount won by winners.

I have just played 17 days of live poker in Macau and BY FAR the biggest whales (mind boggling passive calling stations) were filthy rich Indian Players on holiday. I literally could not go to eat or sleep if there were more than one indian national at my 25/50 or 50/100 HKD table.

They were largely very cool people who did not mind losing their money over and over, did not phase them a bit. The rich in India are VERY rich.

that is all.

India is the new china - at least from a manufacturing sense....

Hong Kong was the old china and their net family income and conditions are way better than they use to be. if you get them when they are broke to play poker imagine what they will do when they become rich....

just saying...

I work a lot in India, own a company and have staff there. The Indian education system horrible and based on rote learning. Most Indians don't learn how to think or solve problems. I previously worked with a lot of Indian NRIs in the US and they were all crazy smart and good thinkers, but now that I spend more time in India I know that they were the cream of the crop, and the majority, even when smart, dont know how to think because in all their education they were never expected to think.

So poker in India would be a huge positive.

Just to give you a quick example, the US gov runs a green card lottery giving out around 50,000 green cards/year. Not much skill required there.

I guess you are unfamiliar with H1-Bs and educational visas.

Also, actually getting the paperwork done to file the papers is usually expensive and hard.

as an actual Indian let me pointedly say there is no poker boom or anything in India, Goa & Sikkim are tiny states with liberal laws & in 99% of the country poker/online gambling(try making a poker is skill game argument to normal people) is illegal. I myself had a lot of trouble in funding my pokerstars a/c & it was only through entropay that I managed to make a deposit at all. Now even entropay may be closing that door. 99.99999% of Indians online would have never played poker online for money. Families ironically play a ton of card games & gambling with cards is very popular with many Indian card games. For poker to "boom" in India you need it to capture Mainstream media somehow, 100-200 people playing a 100-500 $tourney is nothing in a population of 1.2bn. If ever a famous actor/politician/businessman/cricketer were to publicly endorse it then the nos will change dramatically

As for Indian's economic capacity to play, 90% of online poker players seem to be only up to 100nl types. I can assure you there are plenty of people in India who can easily afford to lose 2-3k$ on a hobby. Btw not all Indians are programmers/call center workers (both combined won't even be 5m out of a population of 1210mn). Yes most of the country is poor but there is a significant middle/upper class & govt stats seriously underestimate incomes as size of black/cash economy is at least equal to the size of legal/chq economy. Heck land values here in S delhi are 12000$/yard minimum(even a crap 300 yd house costs 3mn$+ for land) & yet prices seem to rise every month.

I played in Goa while I was there last year. There are 5-6 casino boats, but only one was running a poker game from my time there. I think it was 100-200rs (like 2-5) which made me feel super baller but every hand took like 10 minutes because everybody sees the flop then hollywoods. Super soft but I can't imagine grinding that game.

I think the first thing I'd do if I won the WSOP ME would be to change my citizenship to India and get all the future sponsorships

Citizens of india and china are excluded from green card lottery. So only way for indian immigration to US is either family or high-skill based visas.

I should know a thing or two about H1B's since I am on one. Thanks to indian companies and their fraudulent activities back in 2005/2006 it is way harder now for the rest of us foreigners trying to make it here. Let's just say that most of them are not as "highly skilled" as most think they are, and sometimes they compensate that lack of skill with a lot of cheating and lying, not just making **** up as I have unfortunately experienced and had to deal with their ways first hand. This is what I meant in my earlier post, a lot of foreigners will get their papers through marrying a citizen, green card lottery or a scam, which usually ends up being a lot easier and faster than the hard, long and honest route.
Anyways /derail#2
