Poker Booming in India

http://openthemagazine.com/article/l...s-and-the-atms

Always good to read stuff like this. Although this article is written for a first time poker reader, there is some quite interesting information.

Any of you play there? Another stop on the Asian Poker Tour soon?

Cliffs:

Indian Poker Championship and Indian Poker Series booming in Goa the casino capital of India.

A lot written about skill of poker. Math skills. Quite Positive.

Daniel Negreanu and Eric Lindgren randomly quoted at the end.

Re: Poker Booming in India

Seems like Indians would be really good at poker, given how good they are with computer/math tasks. However I am not sure if they could (on aggregate) handle the temptation of the drugs/alcohol that go along with being a true poker star.

I wouldn't say they are really good at programming compared to others, but rather putting in 20 hour programming sessions for $2 an hour. They are gonna tear up 5nl.

Re: Poker Booming in India

If there's a poker boom in India it will be the single best thing to ever happen to poker.

Re: Poker Booming in India

Here are some interesting passages from the article "The Grinders and the ATMs" by Arindam Mukherjee.

Quote:
...Poker, played with the standard pack of 52 cards, is fast becoming a cult phenomenon in India....

...Amit Varma, blogger and avid poker player at Casino Royale, writes in the India edition of Card Player...

...So much so that even Barack Obama told an Associated Press reporter that he considered himself “a pretty good poker player” who played friendly home games in his pre-White House days as a senator in Illinois to woo dissidents. Elsewhere, in a 2005 case study done by Stanford University, Texas Hold’em served as a model for computer scientists who designed databases with the aim of tackling incomplete information....

These kind of ridiculous, tabloid-esque sweeping statements always bug me. 'The single best thing'? Really?

Re: Poker Booming in India

Not so sure if that's a good thing. I've worked with Indians and they always struck me as intelligent and hard-working honest guys. If poker takes off there it would create many thousands of solid grinders patiently grinding their way up from micro stakes to the top. I don't think Indians are gamblers at all.

[x] doesn't realize that 7% of India = 78,000,000

plus that % are probably the upper class of india who make a decent living, either way it won't hurt the poker scene. Single best thing? perhaps not.

This may create some sort of a boom in Asia, hopefully China and other asian countries follow suit with India, if that's the case, THAT would be the best thing.

not all indians are hardworking/intelligent. I think the gamblers of India are just as spewy as Americans are, it may catch on with some of the hardworking kids there but i'm sure the Indian kids who are doing well in engineering/medicine programs aren't indicative of the type of people who are most likely to play poker in India. It'll take a bit for it to catch on w/ the "intelligent" folk but until then, i'm sure there's going to be a lot of juicy fish .

American Indians...you know, those guys from India that live in America really love poker too. They are horrible at it too. Confirmed.

Good programming skills do not translate into poker. Confirmed. Recomfirmed. Comfirmed a 3rd time.

Re: Poker Booming in India

"Active users, those who use internet at least once a month according the international standards of reckoning, rose from 42 million in September 2008 to 52 million in September 2009 according to the study, registering a year on year growth of 19%."

So how long til 30% are using the net EVERY day? Will probably happen sooner than we all think. I can't recall ever playing with someone from India on Stars

very good programmer has potential to become great poker player, because their mindset is similar to best poker players (asperger-like focus on only thing the love to do, analytic mindset, studying their field hard)

actually it can be said about any field which heavily relies on math

Re: Poker Booming in India

It couldn't really be a bad thing. I mean, India has a huge population and there are a decent number of fairly rich people there. Plus, it's economy is expected to rise steadily at the very least with huge groth potential.

On the other hand - and this shows my ignorance of India - I don't know what this would mean for online play from India. I understand that betting is illegal, for instance, but that doesn't stop huge amounts being bet of sport anyway through illegal bookmakers. Who knows.
