I think the answer to all these is basically no/nothing. Playing online poker as an Australian Is not being made illegal nor does this amendment target banks etc.

As pies said it will be assented (signed by the GG and sent into law shortly after the vote is carried). We should work on the assumption that sites will pull out immediately oncr the vote is finalised.

I had some very positive meetings yesterday. One with Minister Tudge's office (over the phone) and another with Senator Xenophon.

Our campaign to date has been successful in slowing the process down. The Bill will be brought to the house this week but there will be time for MPs to debate the Bill.

Now is the critical time. Contact your MP and Senators. Use our tweets (facebook.com/AustralianOnlinePokerAlliance) our contact form (now at australianonlinepokeralliance.com.au) or pick up the phone and make your voice heard.

Re finances. I have received about $1100 in donations and have spent approx $1500 not including my time. I am going down to Canberra week after next for meetings with Senators and MPs which will obviously have additional costs. We also should be ramping up our advertising spend over the next month.

The most powerful thing you can do though is be engaged and make some noise. If you want to talk to your MP and don't know what to say contact me and let me know who your MP is and we will work on a strategy together.

Thanks

JoeyDel
Do this. Also if you can spare it send some funds to Joey he's basically done thousands of dollars of professional lobbying for our cause for about negative 400 dollars so far (i've only contributed $70us so far personally, but plan to give more). It's FAR more efficient for us as poker players to try and beat this now than try and spend years lobbying to make online poker legal once this bill has passed if it doesn't get amended.

I'll make some phone calls to my state's Senators on Monday or Tuesday when I get time

What does this exactly mean for us? Is this the period where they determine if the bill goes through. And what information will we find out after the date?

It'll be the second reading - usually the opposition will give their position on the bill then there's some back and forth over its merits/problems, then they'll vote on whether they agree with it on principle.

After the date we'll know if it's likely to pass and possibly if there'll be amendments made to it. If it's agreed to in principle and consideration in detail is passed then it's almost certain the bill will pass as is. From what I'm hearing elsewhere and in this thread it'll probably be agreed to in principle but will get consideration

That is good news if it goes to consideration right?

Hard to say, there's a number of reasons why they may want to consider it further. NXT wrote a few recommendations that they want included but none of them mention poker.

Also guys, if the bill goes through and stars leaves aus, is it likely they could rejoin legally like they have done in other countries?

Yes. I can confirm this. I discussed with the Minister's office on Friday and he confirmed that it would be introduced mid week but there would be time for debate.

When it actually moves to a vote will depend on the government agenda. This will become more obvious when we see what Turnbull is talking about and where he pops up for press releases etc. We don't know the time frame for sure but it isn't listed for the senate for this week so there is still a little bit of time.

Please make this time as valuable as possible. Pick up the phone to an MP or Senator. Send a Letter to the Editor to your local paper. Use our daily tweets and just generally make some noise!

If you need any help with anything (letter or phone script) get in touch and I will help.

Thanks

I got a reply back from my MP, Tim Watts (Labor), after a month of emails, letters & phoning his office. I had to speak with 3 different staffers, who all said they would get back to me.
My thoughts after talking to them are:
1. Tim’s office had received multiple emails but he hadn’t replied any. If you are in Gellibrand and haven’t rung his office, do it!
2. Tim couldn’t be bothered with responding and delegated all aspects of responses to his staff. Dylan (the staffer) who had to search for labor press-releases to work out what labor’s position was.
3. Tim’s office had no idea what other MPs were doing. I made the mistake of mentioning the Carolyn McKenzie email. Dylan obviously contacted her and sent me a form email.
4. Tim’s office lead me to believe they didn’t know the difference between sports-betting/wagering and poker, let alone pokies & poker.

The response was the same as Carolyn McKenzie email (Post #1330) but with the following added:
“In government, Labor introduced legislation to place limits on gambling advertising on television. We also rejected recommendations to water down Australia’s online gaming laws until national harm minimisation strategies were adopted.

In addition, Labor will review the recommendations of the recently released Review of the Impact of Illegal Offshore Wagering (the O’Farrell Review) and monitor the impact of gambling advertising to ensure that our policy strikes the right balance”

Definitely out of date. Can't remember the exact date but the office was closed a good 6 months ago.

Everyone was either transferred internationally or made redundant.

Incredibly disappointing that Shane Warne didn't stick up for us. Turns out he just wants to "protect his brand".
