Obviously no one wants Stars to be banned in Australia, but those worrying and/or stressing over the situation is probably a bit silly. I'm inclined to not even think about it and just carry on, because there is actually nothing any of us can do to control the situation anyway. If it happens it happens, if it doesn't it doesn't.

It's not like we won't be able to cashout our funds etc, so no point stressing over something completely out of our control?

Is this a real concern or can you put my mind at ease?

Thanks.

So are you unwilling to say that Pokerstars will still be available for real money play in Australia 1 week from today (Several days after the UK legislation comes into effect)?

I understand you don't want to speculate on a distant future, but 1 week from now is not distant.

Thanks for your reply.

The changes we are making next week are in order to comply with our offering to UK players. This is not something that impacts our ability to offer services to other jurisdictions (nothing will change next week in that respect).

Thus, we will still be offering real money games to Australian players next week, in the rare event that anything changes we will be proactive in our communication to players.

I'm not sure if we can read anything into the fact it took 5 days for the first reply but the last one is about as definitive as I've seen from anyone at Stars.

Maybe pulling out of all of those other countries was enough to appease the lawmakers, at least for now.

Edit - Looks like that last reply is a template they're sending to everyone.

I still think that poker will be offered in Australia/Russia but it's certainly disconcerting that the replies they have given us have not been as definite as the one above.

Good to see Stars clarify the matter. I didn't think Stars would leave Australia without legislative changes here in Australia, and that seems to have been confirmed in that email. Fortunately, Tony Abbott is too worried about trying to appease big business and making poor people angry at other poor people and dealing with a semi-hostile senate to put any legislative effort into anything to do with online poker for the remainder of his first (and possibly only, if the last few months polling is accurate) term.

At this point, the status quo is great for us, and hopefully nothing changes that in the near future.

Abbott has shown an uncanny knack for annoying absolutely everyone (quite a feat after Labour's circus-like shenanigans prior to his election) and I think cracking down on poker would make some people happy e.g. A Current Affair watching reactionaries. So on those grounds alone, I'm hoping it's not a priority for him.

Anti-gambling crackdowns of any sort will piss off the pub/club industry, do you remember the fuss they kicked up over pokies restrictions of any sort? Any anti-gambling restrictions wouldn't be specific to poker (it's too small a market to matter) and we'd have Tom Waterhouse and the sportsbetting industry and the pub/club industry that relies on pokies revenue on our side.

That said, at the rate Stars is going this week maybe we won't care if they pull out in a few months time if another site can step up to the plate

I can ensure you with absolute certainty that Clubs Australia clearly differentiates between its position on pokies and online poker.

The truth is they would prefer attention diverted away from Pokies to online gaming and that's come straight from the horses mouth.

Looking at other sites due to Stars rake increases and other crap they have been doing.

I created an account at 888.

I then tried to create an account at bwin, but it seems they aren't accepting Australian players? Why did they stop?

This is from their site:

We are now closed in your country of residence and no longer accepting new players, deposits, bets or game play. If you have a real-money account, your balance is accessible to withdraw.

Hmm, BWIN pulled out of 18 countries (not incl Aus) in April 2013. I had not seen anything (except a rumour of an affiliate letter 2 weeks ago that they were pulling out of grey markets).

Their website still seems to have a page promoting Aussie poker:

Will PS now having a sports betting option have any impact? The Aus government doesnt give 2 s#*ts about poker but sports books are always on the radar.

If Stars opens a legal sportsbook it will very likely close down poker in Australia. Other sportsbooks have not offered their poker rooms here.

Aus sportsbetting market is absurdly competitive, theres 0% chance pokerstars would be allowed to run if they dipped their toe into that pool

Hopefully theyve figured that out and it wont be offered here

I bet on Pinnacle every day and it's an offshore sportsbetting site that services Australians. I play on Stars every day and it's an offshore poker site that services Australians. If they were to merge and offer both services, I don't see how that's different
