It isn't a dumb question. Gamblers are notorious for telling people about their wins and excluding losses.

Someone goes to the casino 5 days in a row and losses $500 each time, on his 6th visit he wins 2K. He won't say he is down $500, he will tell people about his 2K win. Non-gamblers are aware of this and inquire about the losses.

The question can be annoying but there is some merit to asking it.

I tend to just ask people how much they make a month instead. Mostly they don't like to talk about it.

I do not discuss poker finances with others besides 2 of my brothers and 2 close friends. 99% of the people do not understand it really is a skill game. I do not feel a need to discuss finances with others nor am I even going to get into income or losses from the previous session from poker. People do not understand again that it is a skill game, they look upon it as something like roulette. It is a losing battle, besides the fact that is none of their business.

aye as a general rule i just try and not discuss money with friends or even players, just quote results but not really actual cash figures. needless

That question always makes me wonder how much I'd have 'won' if I were able to add up the total pot size of every hand I've won. That would be a phenonenal figure I'd think.

Looks like OP needs to lighten up a little bit more after losing sessions when confronted with the dreaded question.."So how did you do?"
When you answer that question with "I WAS up $200.." your just putting yourself out there to be asked ..but how much did you lose?

Ask someone what their salary is, and if they tell you... you can be sure they'll be giving you their gross salary. At which point you can say "But how much did you lose?" [to the government]
