The phrase "But how much did you lose?"

I recall back then i hear people asking someone who plays poker "But how much did you lose?" Whethers its someone who plays professional or someone who plays 1 day at the casino for fun. I never understood why someone would ask this. Assuming a friend or relative asks you how was poker. You could say yesterday at the casino I was up $200. Or I was up $400 the last week. Then they ask you "But how much did you lose?"

I don't know about you guys but even if i never played poker or gamble, i am pretty sure if someone tells me they up $10 or $100,000 , I would not ask them how much did you lose. How does this line even make any sense? If i lost, i would have said i was down $100 etc. I never believe someone would ask this dumb question after you mention your winning or loss for the day or week until i had a friend of mine asked me about it. I recalled 9 months ago he asked me about it and i said i was playing poker recreattional and was up some amount for the last few days. Then he goes "But how much did you lose?" I thought in my head is this a joke question? I never thought someone would really ask this in real life because if i told u im up even $1, why in the world would you ask how much did you lose.

I read online they ask this because they are skeptical if you can profit from poker because they believe you can't. Is this their reasoning?

Re: The phrase "But how much did you lose?"

It is common for gamblers to discuss their winnings (i.e. revenue) without factoring in their losses. For example, a slot player might tell their friend about their $1k slot win the night before when in reality they were down $100 for the night. This is how degenerate gamblers remember their play and it is what keeps the losing players coming back.

Just tell them you are talking about net winnings, not isolated winnings.

Re: The phrase "But how much did you lose?"

It's still retarded - but I think it makes more sense for tournaments.

Like if someone was saying "I won 500k last year in tournaments" - someone who doesn't play poker might assume that the bragger is referring to total winnings, which is the measurement used on many poker rating sites. In that context, it would make perfect sense to ask how much they lost (ie, how much they spent in buyins) - but yeah, pretty retarded overall.

Probably because bragging about how much you're up over the "last few days" is retarded? Even Blackjack players go on heaters and can be up over the "last few days." That doesn't make it a retarded question to ask how much you've lost.

Re: The phrase "But how much did you lose?"

I always just tell them my losses. No one ever asks, "Okay, but how much did you win?" and no one asks for money either.

Re: The phrase "But how much did you lose?"

Its just becasue people associate poker with gambling (e.g. casino games), which they know you cant win in long term. And so they just assume that you mustve lost overall.

It's not a stupid question if you open your mind a little.

Gambling preys on the concept of intermittent reinforcement. This is why Vegas exists. Non-gamblers often realize this and understand that gamblers frequently only mention the latest score. Even though poker is the one game where some players have an edge, most players are losing players and are still only going to remember the last big score.

I've never heard a pro just volunteer to me how much was won in a session or a few day span or at all. In general when I'm asked I just say "I did okay." There are only a few with whom I share hard numbers, and these are good friends who also play and who train with me.

So if you're frequently running into this question, maybe you should stop sharing the information? Do your friends tell you how much they made at their job this week?
