If you don't like XYZ why don't you vote for the other guy who'll do exactly the same ****ing thing

At risk of derailing this thread, this post pisses me off enough that I'm going to respond anyway. There are no viable candidates for major political offices in the US who will take a serious stance against abuses of state power and in favor of privacy and personal liberty. Who, if anyone, I vote for has no bearing on my right to complain about the government abusing its power.

Do you really think that with McCain or Romney in office the FBI would be much more well behaved?

Also, I'm pretty sure Adam is Canadian.

federal court jurisprudence over the last decade or so on the 4th amendment:

(don't hate cause i linked wikipedia i think their case summaries and rule statements are really good)

in fact, i can't think of a single recent supreme court case where they weakened privacy protections under the 4th amendment in an issue regarding technology. of course, a judge ruling one way in a suppression motion doesn't tell you much but the judicial check on executive (and legislative) action is very real.

justice scalia is probably the strongest proponent of privacy rights under the 4th amendment on the supreme court.it isn't a simple left-right distinction when it comes to 4th amendment privacy rights at least with the judiciary.

also the FBI employs nearly 35,000 people. it's as absurd to blame obama for the FBI's methods in one particular search as it is to to blame harry truman for hill 142 or whatever getting captured in the korean war.

Interesting ruling today (?) in the Defendant's favor, tossing evidence from his villa ..... , will make it tough to go to trial on June 1 as scheduled .... even on the recent conspiracy charge ....

Didn't Rob Hall say he would shed some light and great details/stories, but hesitated due to the ongoing investigation? now that the case is dismissed, i hope he comes back and adds some color to this story.

After Broken Tooth Koi, the former head of the 14K triad, was released from prison, in 2012, he joined Phua for dinner. The encounter, photographed by intelligence operatives, fed rumors that Phua himself was a high-ranking 14K figure. "He has triad connections," says a Macau casino executive. "He's rich. He's not a triad. Any rich man who knows a lot of triads here can cause harm to you if you say something that they don't like."

Great read.

I particularly liked the soccer match-fixing anecdote accomplished by simply cutting off the lights at the stadiums.

Also, if he has really won the most from poker as it notes it proves once again that table selection is the most important "skill" a poker player needs to have.

I think an unlimited bankroll is a pretty big edge.

Great Read, thanks for the article.

A lot to take in in that article, if interpol are still investigating the alleged match fixing in the english premier league & Mr paul phua has ties to the former employees of interpol it makes you wonder.

The article plays fast with a lot of things, for instance he estimates that;
Total Worldwide Volume of the World cup is 130bn and that Phua's books profit ~1% on its own volume. Later he quotes someone as stating that Phua stands to make 1-2bn every world cup.

Does not compute.

If he's that careless with things that are so easily verifiable or refuted, how are we to trust anything else he writes.

So this guy basically sets up in highly visible places around the world and sits around with associates taking illegal bets over wire?

Far be it for me to question a man that has reportedly accumulated so much wealth and success in this industry, but isn't there a better way?
