I apologize if this isn't the right forum for this thread. Not really clear if there's a better place for it. It can be moved if the mod thinks it best.

The topic came up in another thread about the origin of certain terms, such as kill and straddle. Anybody have any opinions on those words? Or are there other poker terms that you've wondered about?

I know the term "passing the buck" came from poker:

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but there are a number of terms, phrases and idioms in the U.S. English vernacular that clearly have origins in poker. Offhand, I'm thinking "up the ante," "close to the vest," and "tipping your hand." Not uncommon to hear these even from people who have never played poker in their lives.

I'm sure there are others but those are ones that come to mind right now.

Pretty sure "That is my child" has its origin from poker.

I could see this thread turning into a collection of links that provide the origin of various 2+2isms. So "betting kk into trup qq," "triple range merge," "Quack quack she does not like it," and so forth.

Definitely would be more amusing -- and educational for the more recent members.

there was a regular 5 card draw game in one bar. there was a really hot waitress, who was always there, when the high stakes guys played. the only problem was, that she had a 23 year old kid, who was a '******' (actually he was quite bright and later made a fortune ... but that's a another story)

anyway ... everyone called him Tex, b/c he wore a cowboy hat and a wooden toy pistol. he was always loud, clapping hands and giggling. so the regs got annoyed, but the waitress had a nice cleavage, so banning Tex was like banning the bewbz.

long story short. to keep Tex happy they let him play. obviously he didn't have the money or the skills to be a real player. so they just gave him two cards and pretended, that he plays.

after a few hours Tex had picked up the lingo and knew some of the hands. after one of the guys won a decent pot with two pair vs two pair. Tex yelled "i won i won". everyone shook their heads and rolled their eyes.

but then he put his two cards on the table, where the winning hand was laying (kings over twos, if i'm not misleading). tex had K-5 ans yelled "Full House, Full House ... Tex is hold them full houses"

... over a century later, 'Texas Hold'em" is the cadillac of poker

I remember that Joe Stapelton came up with "a chip and a chair" back in 2009.

"Rigtard" was born here on 2+2:

Quote:
Rigtard

A person who tries to convince others that online poker is rigged without providing any evidence.

"If you rigtards keep coming up with the same rubbish and offering no credible evidence then of course you are going to get mocked."

Yeh, I guess it was kind of optimistic of me to expect any kind of serious discussion from 2+2 users here (except for a couple serious ones). Might as well end the thread Mods.

I still think "Old Man Coffee" is the best one to come out of 2+2 (Rumnchess). OMC FTW.
