Not sure where the insult was; I wasn't finding insult, and if you meant that phrase differently than I understand, certainly none was intended either. The point was simply that he's been banned for over a month and it got relatively little notice. That's not to say that anyone who didn't notice can't or won't miss him, of course.

Which I guess doesn't mean it's never happened, but if it has I'm not aware of it, and you'd think it would have been mentioned in the mod forum at some point.

Generally speaking we don't consult with each other over day to day decisions like closing this thread or deleting that post, and we don't overturn each other's decisions without checking with that person first. So even if I thought the Barry thread should be re-opened I'd never do so without asking PP first, and ultimately it would be his decision. But I don't think that was a thread I was following so I'm clueless as to why it was closed.

Which moderators are bots and what random number generator(s) do they use to delete posts and close threads?

I found this thread to be pretty informative. Modding is a thankless job, much like a teacher or hall monitor.

While we're jerkin' each other off, let me just say that you get my vote for best mod. I've never seen you say anything remotely mean and you always seem to treat everyone with dignity, even when they are being rude to you. Well done.

I'd like to suggest that when a thread is to be deleted, delete whatever posts or pages necessary first, and then just lock it for a while so people know what happened.
Then delete the thread at your leisure.
Otherwise people will waste time searching for something that isn't there.. or draw some wrong conclusion as to what happened.

On the plus side, a locked thread illustrates what sorts of things are unacceptable, and can be something of a training measure, while a deleted thread has no value.

Thats a good idea that we do practice on occasion. Long time ago I suggested a feature that allows us to lock a thread and set a timer on an auto-delete. Didn't make it into this version.

This is something we can do with redirects on moved threads.

My mistake was underestimating or disrespecting the power and scope of 2+2.

Also people locking, then later going back and deleting a thread, is fairly common.

Or me coming along and deleting a locked thread with 5 posts that was locked a few hours ago, since I know from my pre-mod days that coming into the forum and seeing a bunch of short locked threads is cluttering and annoying.

If the thread is utter crap, though, I'm always just deleting it first.

I'm not sure who PP is.

Could you have him/her come here and explain it?

I don't see why a Lindgren owes $x to players is allowed, but a Barry owes $x to a bank isn't allowed. Both seem reasonable imo.

edited to add: Not to mention the numerous other threads where someone owes someone "$x" amount...we allow those because some of those players ask others to borrow money and by outing them it stops scams (like brad booth).

Barry not paying a bank is JUST as relevant as brad not following through on a swap.

I'd like to propose that when a thread is locked or closed, the responsible moderator could sign it, so that whoever was interested in the reasoning behind, or the cause of the lock could contact him/her directly.
I wouldn't question a lock's validity, but without the ability to discuss it's cause, whoever may have been the offender is none the wiser.

I'd also like to propose that this "OFFICIAL NVG MODERATION DISCUSSION THREAD" be pinned to Page 1 of NVG so people who don't know it exists can see it, and those who do know about, but forgot the title, need not go page by page in search of it.

Pinning it isn't a bad idea.

Incidentally, the thread about the guy who was convicted for robbing a home poker game was locked because it pretty much instantly devolved into a discussion about appropriate sentencing guidelines. This is NVG, not Politics. If you want to argue about appropriate sentences for various criminal offenses, this is not the place to do it.

I'm glad the thread was pinned up there. Thanks to whoever is responsible.

That robbery thread was not what inspired me to request mods sign their work. Someone was bothered by something else... who.. what... why.. total mystery.

And as for "attachments"?...

html is off because the joint uses BBCode for posting.

I would like to see the mod who closes it down making the last post in the thread with the reason why it is being closed. Most times that can be brief (two words would suffice in many cases!). People who disagree can then comment itt.

FTR and contrary to popular belief, the term "porn" is not in the filter. Just don't post any.
