Macao's Venetian players are so cliquey. If one of their friends wins/loses a hand, they all gather round for 5-10 minutes and act like it's the first big pot they've ever seen in their entire lives. Anything over 50 bbs prompts hours worth of commentary.
When they aren't winning or losing large pots, they'll just check in with each other sporadically every fifteen minutes or so, either sitting down or standing next to their friend(s). You get the sense that they live there because they know everybody and it's obvious. It's an unwelcoming an environment for fish who are often playing alone.

So really not that different from the way in which Negreanu, Mercier, Selbst, Bouree, Seiver Hennigan etc behave in Las Vegas cardrooms?

The vibe is way different than most US cardrooms I've been to. There is a lot more loitering by pros at the Macao Venetian (without playing) and the atmosphere is less friendly. Two non-pro dudes living in HK were complaining to me (unprompted) about how there are a lot of "little gangs" roaming about, so it is having somewhat of an impact. The Wynn is better imo.
