Hey Y'all! I didn't mean Doyle caught a cheater, but I did.

Anybody know Kitt Pettigrew out of Clovis, New Mexico? He was a cheater mentioned in the print that goes with this brief Doyle Brunson story. Doyle was playing heads up with a bad moonshiner, and barking iron came into play. This is a brief video where Doyle tells one of his favorite stories. What a great, nice guy!

In my second little gambling joint, a partner and I sold beer, and whiskey, and had blackjack and poker with a max rake of 50 cents. Curly Cavitt told me he'd teach me to gamble where I could make something out of myself. We were in Longview and an old man cheated me, and Curly watched, Johnny Moss, Sarge Ferris and others were playing a huge razz game there.

Curly ran in Kitt Pettigrew to cheat us. I knocked it off, and ran a thumb across my partners back. The thumb sign signals trouble. We would quit if cheaters came around. We were 19. There were older and tougher. He had a road partner named, I swear!, River Boat Dave. After I went to bed, Dave tried to slip my bankroll out of my Levi's.

Is that what they called it in those days?

ChaosNitpicker focused on one word as usual. Bankroll. Yes, Nitpicker, at age 19, I carried all my money on me. I was a gambler and big enough to carry money. Somebody might want to bet me something. I was a gambler and that is what gamblers did. In Texas gambling, we use the word bankroll to mean the money in your pocket often. Also called b.r. and I have big b.r. and little b.r. Big b.r. is gambling money, hundred dollar bills wrapped in rubber bands that you do NOT take out of your pocket in public. Little b.r. is your walking around money, spending money. You have enough to pay for things without flashing big b.r. You can also throw big b.r. on a roof or behind a refrige, I'd of called it an ice box, but you would have nitpicked yourself sick again. Does your mother know you are blogging again? Remember what the Doctor said.

Johnny Hughes, we have something in common.

We both dig old school players. I would like to share this video featuring Sammy Farha (very rare video!)

I'm pretty sure he was referring to what a hooker might slip out of your Levis Johnny. Love to read your posts.
There probably is some poker playin gigolo out there who refers to that particular male appendage as his "bankroll"

We have a winner. And Johnny, I was not nitpicking what you wrote. I was making a joke out of what you wrote. There is a difference.

Doyle Brunson, sometimes I think he's not even human.

Hey Johnny! Did you ever play or encounter any of the Hold 'Em or other poker games (prob stud) that were played down in Austin in the 50's and 60's?
Bobby Hoff has talked a bit about some of the games that frat boys and profs played in at The Univ of Texas.... any old time Austin poker stories?

I got a nice letter from Doyle. Bill Douglas the guy there he was talking about was way too tough. He will killed in a poker game in the south, Mississippi or Tennessee. There were highjackers at a poker game and he wouldn't give up the money. A pool shooter Doyle knew named Wobbles was there. Tommy Thomas, Titanic's son, was there also. He and Douglas were close friends. The robbers decided to spare Tommy became a preacher, preaching a lot in prisons.

Doyle suggested I read a book by Jack Newton, Confessions of a Gentleman Road Gambler or something near that. I'll look for it. Its need to have Doyle Brunson as a pen pal, and source. The single nicest fellow in poker, and what a memory! I'm headed to Amazon on the Newton book.

The book Doyle suggested is Confessions of a Crossroad Gambler by Jack Newton, but it is $185! Maybe I can get it on interlibrary loan. I never played poker around Austin. I do know Bobby Hoff, and played a few times with him here in Lubbock at the Shop. The Wizard is a legend. Went from being a big doper to being a health food freak.

In West Texas, nearly all they played was Hold 'em after 1955 or earlier. We played some seven five lowball. I played with Johnny Moss and that crew in 1961. All they played was Hold 'em and low ball. We played ausction bridge before we started and Moss was my partner. Doyle's biography is one of the best and most accurate poker histories.

I don't know about accurate as I wasn't there so I will take your word for that, but it's one of the most enjoyable. I prefer my books in softcover, but will buy something in hardcover if the quality of the material (the writing) justifies it and I can't wait for the softcover. Doyle's Godfather Of Poker is a book I gladly bought in hardcover.
