Pretlow seems to be the man in charge. He gave the thumbs up to DFS and it passed. Now he seems to be on board for poker. If he can sell the skill game angle we're in,but I'm skeptical.

Can anyone who follows this closely give us some insight on the potential timing of this? Is this like last year where we likely won't know one way or the other until June?

I completely agree and identify with what Frenbar posted btw. I contact my reps every so often and especially as things seem to get more real (there's no reason not to, it's very easy and doesn't take much time) but at this point I also can't get excited about this until something passes.

Contacted both my state reps using this format if anyone would like to copy/paste.

Hello,

As a voter and constituent of New York, I urge you to approve the state legalization and regulation of online poker in New York when it comes to a vote in your chamber.

Poker opponents argue that state-licensed iPoker could undermine laws in states where the game is not authorized, but it has actually been a terrific regulatory success. In fact, opponents cannot produce evidence of a single underage or out-of-state player, or even security gaps that could make such play possible. This is no surprise, given the robust geolocation, age, identity, and anti-money laundering verification technologies employed by these sites to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.

Thus, the benefits of a safe, legal environment to play online poker (which will exist regardless of attempts to ban it) are unquestionable not only for the people playing but for the state as well. Please vote yes on this proposition.

Thanks,

Contacted my NY assemblyman via email. I think I may go to his local office and politely exercise my 1st amendment right there too. If it is important enough, we should all carve out the time.

ONE TIME, ONE TIME!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what needs selling on this topic at this point. Hard to refute the mathematical nature and libratus etc. is pretty good proof.

Any how - GL NY

The only people who don't think poker is gambling are those making a living from it.Ask 99.99999999 NY'ers on the street and in the State House in Albany and they'll say poker is gambling.Perception outweighs the charts and graphs.

From what I know (father was in UK parliament) I'd add that this will carry more weight with a politician if you replace "constituent of New York" with the actual electoral district you live in and he represents. Also if you are sending it by email put your full name and address so it's from a real person rather than "the internet".

And good luck.

No, even those making a living from it believe it's gambling unless they have a strange definition of gambling

You can be good at gambling, you can have an edge in forms of gambling, but of course poker is gambling (unless you're stacking the deck or marking cards or something, I guess).

It is a game of chance but one with a huge element of skill.

There are people who beat sportsbooks or the horses over the long run, very few people would argue that sportsbetting or betting on horse racing isn't gambling.

My point was skill vs.chance and convincing those who matter that poker deserves a ''skill'' carve out as opposed to horse racing et al.,which are lumped in with all the other games of chance.

If NY passes online poker and recreational marijuana I may volunteer for house arrest.

I'd be happy with decriminalization as a first step...then I can bring it back from Mass whenever I'm in the eastern part of NY.

Bill is going to the Senate financing committee next which is these people if you want to contact:

That being said the 2016 Bill passed senate, so I think it is probably the assembly we need to worry about most...

I sent my message again through the form on the assembly site too. Prior, I sent it only through my email. Also, I still plan on paying a visit (polite and respectful of course) in the very near future to his local district office too.

This is good news especially expanding existing electronic table complexes to include live poker.

What would online poker in New York look like? What other states have legalized online poker, and how do their player pools look?

NJ, Nevada, Delaware

PokerScout has the details. But the bigger sites among them have about 33% of the cash players that Chico currently does. Regulated ipoker in the USA desperately needs a populous state on board.

When does the current "session" regarding NY politics end? Like is the bill passing imminent, or does the session conclude at the end of the year?
