Acting was actually ok. Plot was mind-bogglingly awful, but with the redeeming factor that the main character is far from a hero, or even any good at poker, just a random fish.

I'm not sure whether they meant to portray him as good or bad at poker. He has basic odds memorized, but still makes awful plays like limp-folding JTs heads up to someone who hasn't seen his cards. Part of the confusion is that the filmmakers don't seem to know very much about poker themselves. I think they meant to portray his next fold, A3o, as being worse than the first one when actually it's better.

Funny thing is, if they knew about this forum, they could've found someone very knowledgeable about the game who would've acted as "poker consultant" for a very small fee, just to get an IMDB credit.

Fairly sure they meant the opening 'main hand' where he bets 9s and gets called by 10s to portray him as a fish; also when he got totally wasted and kept on playing.

Pretty bad movie overall imo. Cool that it was poker related, but a terrible movie nonetheless.

Random trivia: this guy played 3 different characters on Murder She Wrote over a 4 year period in the 1990s.

Free money, Greek mobsters'………..and kept on walking.

I wouldn't have bought them anyway, tbh, but you'd have to be insane to try to smuggle in chips in a game run by 'those people.'

Is this actually about poker or is it yet another film exploring the US debt collection industry?

Just went to check the rating on Rotten Tomatoes - can't recall seeing an audience rating this low before? Went back to check some of the more silly movies have watched for free from Amazon Prime on a rainy Sunday afternoon, like the cat move Nine Lives ... and even that got 42%!

Also checked to see if there's been any more news about the poker movie Aaron Sorkin's written and directed - it sounds like some industry people have seen some previews, and feel it may have some promise?

There are those who suggesting that Molly’s Game could be a contender for the best gambling film of all time, although it would be up against some pretty stiff competition. Remember a young Steve McQueen losing out in that final game of five card stud to Edward G Robinson in the Cincinnati Kid from 1965? Or Matt Damon and Edward Norton, seriously out of their depth in the Texas Hold’em cult classic, Rounders, from 1998? Or Ocean’s Eleven? The rat pack original or the Clooney, Pitt remake. We’re going to have to wait a little while longer to find out ...
