I'm not sure whether they meant to portray him as good or bad at poker. He has basic odds memorized, but still makes awful plays like limp-folding JTs heads up to someone who hasn't seen his cards. Part of the confusion is that the filmmakers don't seem to know very much about poker themselves. I think they meant to portray his next fold, A3o, as being worse than the first one when actually it's better.
Funny thing is, if they knew about this forum, they could've found someone very knowledgeable about the game who would've acted as "poker consultant" for a very small fee, just to get an IMDB credit.
