Las Vegas locals would and have supported a hockey venture, i.e. the Wranglers ..... but that requires a very different price point and demographic than something that would justify a $350MM franchise fee. The Wranglers crowds were largely kids, because their tickets were next to nothing. Games were generally competitive, as hockey, on a minor league level, and as family entertainment ..... the crowd was pretty good at the games I attended.
I'd like to see another minor league team here, but think an NHL team would not do well financially.
Otherwise, watching sports live is not going to get the discretionary entertainment dollar here from locals; the competition for entertainment dollars from locals here is pretty fierce.
(I also think it makes more sense in this market for a licensee to go after the legal sports
betting business of professional sports fans than the sports
watching business of those same locals. While there may be a tie-in for tourists between live games and betting, I do not think the same appeal holds as a business for the locals market.)
