need to convince wife that poker is not really gambling. please help me!!
Hi guys,
To make a long story short, I have been playing online and live poker for a few years. I have never really been able to beat the online arena. However, I have managed to do very well in the live 2/5 games making consistent profits. I thought about doing this full time, but neverf had the courage to quit my job. Finally I took a 6 month sabbatical leave from my work and have been playing everyday for the last 4 months, playing mainly 2/5 and 5/10.
I have a pretty good job, but in the last four months, I have managed to make roughly 50% more at poker that I would in the same time working. And I feel that my game is getting better, and I am getting better as a player, which leads me to believe that I will be able to better these results.
The problem is that my wife has an objection to me playing poker as a career, and her main argument is that gambling is against our religion. I have tried to explain to her that it is not really gambling, instead a lot of skill is needed to consistently win in the long run.
However, she is not convinced. Can anyone help me here with some convincing reasonings that you may have come up with in the past. Also, if anyone else has had the same problem, how did you deal with it?
Thanks

Poker is gambling. That doesn't mean it isn't a game of skill.

make her see that your not playing the house, yuor playing other people who like you have decisions to make, those who understand the math of the game more and how to play against others will make better decisions.
explain to her that if your 70% to win then yes you will lose 30% and can lose more in the short term but in the long term you will profit
if taht doesnt work, divorce her, or slap her. either one is fine.

Dude, even if you can consistently beat the games, poker is still 'gambling' by any reasonable definition:
'Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value (referred to as "the stakes") on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods.'

She was ok with me taking a leave to play poker as long as at the end of it i was going back to work.
Now that I only have two months left, I was hinting to her that maybe I should not and that is when the arguments have started. She is actually pretty cool, she says that convince her it is not gambling, hence not against religion, and she will support whatever I decide.

but it is maybe convince her that its a game when played optimally using info from your enviroment it can be a lucrative gamble long term but to say its not gambling means u most likely do not posess the skills to beat the rake and game long term and most likely a loset degen that wants to lie to yourself about it being different then other forms of gambling so its ok

when you took this "leave" you obviously meant it as a trial run. if you made a substantial amount of cash you would wanna quit your job and pursue this full time?
knowing your wife, shouldnt all of this be thought out ahead of time? even your way of convincing her this isnt gambling?
