Multiple possibilities, probably hacked to attempt to be super-used later

Buy a portable motion sensor webcam and hide it in your room.

They're small and cheap and you can catch people both when you're out, and when you're there with 'friends' like Chino or JLM who won't mind helping themselves to any chips or cash you leave lying around.

I find it difficult to believe there wasn't at least some involvement by some member of the hotel staff.

Obviously a really stressful spot for you OP, I hope this is resolved and leads to someone getting arrested but I somehow doubt it.

Consult with a computer expert about what should be done with the laptop and thanks for sharing so others can be on alert.

Thank you for posting this and taking the time to share it. This should be taken VERY seriously by Pokerstars. If they do not make sure to get to the bottom of this, it is unacceptable and scary. Our community should continue to put pressure on the hotel and stars to make sure this is resolved.

Crazy story. This is one of the reasons I do not like to associate with other poker players and the tournament scene. There is too much money in poker and a lot of very shady people.

I doubt they will catch the culprits, but I hope your message will be heard by everyone at the tournament. I would hate to see these people make off with lots of "winnings" from hacked laptops.

Jeans,

Just want to say thanks for sharing your story. Can clearly tell how painful it is to even discuss this situation.

Of all the scumbags that play poker, its awful that this happens to one of the nicest and most respectful of people.

Stay strong mate. The truth always wins in the end. You have the entire poker community fighting with you spiritually.

This whole story sounds incredibly upsetting and frustrating.

As per what to do with the laptop; for the amount of money that you play for regardless of if some IT guy says it's trojan free, buy a new one. The piece of mind you'll get is worth infinitely more than the $1500 you'll spend on a new laptop. (Maybe stars should just foot the bill for the new one)

Gl with getting this resolved.

Excellent writing! I don't think I've ever seen a long OP in NVG that was better.

So we have two instances where the laptop was actually discovered missing. How worried should any other high stakes player be that their laptop was compromised. This is the two times they were caught, but how many times were they in and out of other rooms without being noticed?

Crazy definately sounds like 2-3 hotel staff working together with an outside on this, hope this turns out well for you two.

1. Do not turn back on that laptop, especially if it can be connected to the internet
2. Buy a new laptop, with your standard stakes this will cost you 2-3BB and could will save you a ton of money in the future
3. Bring your laptop to a trusted security expert (preferably an (ex)hacker that you personally know or that is vouched for by a ton of people you know). Get him to find out exactly what has been installed/done to your machine and if there any unusual IP addresses etc that it is "talking to"
4. Change your passwords to your poker sites / email address etc from a different computer (preferably the one that you buy). Use a different password for each account, it can be a pain, but is needed
5. Get security tokens for all sites that offer them if you don’t already
Sound advice.
I typed up a bit for the other thread but got locked before I hit post, might be useful for people who aren't playing high enough that they can just buy a new laptop:

In fact, many victimized players panic to the point where they actually dispose of the laptop or give it away. Almost all of them reformat and are super-careful what they put back on, so this slick "document virus" plan would rarely work.

b) It's not about writing more code. It's a lot more effort to infect existing documents on the computer, and these perpetrators don't have the luxury of time. They want to get the computer, install the spyware, and get the thing back to where it was ASAP. This is like thinking that home invasion burglars might have also planted hidden cameras to spy on you having sex with your wife. Could they? Yes. Would it make sense for them to do this? Absolutely not.

c) Yes, it does.

d) Again, document viruses are used to trick users into infecting their computer. Nobody would use them when they already have physical access to the computer they want to infect. I advised that their documents are safe because they are unlikely to be infected in this particular scenario, and it's a pain in the rear to keep all of your personal data off your travel computer. It would be great for several reasons to travel with a laptop without sensitive data/documents on it, but that's just not practical for most people -- especially poker pros who spend a lot of time away from home. So rather than suggest ridiculous levels of computer austerity, I am advising a solution that wipes out the spyware (reformat) while allowing these people to retain important data files they might need while on the road.
On your thoughts about planting a document trojan.. IF this thief was savvy enough they would boot straight into a USB from the menu and install the software/dll based trojan, then if they had enough time (and the laptop was password protected); bootmenu into the system user/pass list and default the admin password then load into the OS. They could have a look around recent documents, looking for a file such as a live poker result tracking excel file which would surely be carried over to a new install, and attach a trojan macro to that.
And if they were very skilled they could plant a trojan in the master boot record/BIOS which would be almost undetectable and reformatting wouldn't erase it.

If you have high suspicions of being infected:
- A reformat and reinstall will most likely be sufficient
- If you want to be safer, buy a new laptop HDD open your laptop and switch them out, this would remove any boot trojan. Or you could reflash the master boot record of the hard disk but this isn't for everybody.
- It's very very unlikely someone would plant one in the BIOS but to be safe you could reflash your bios. Again, this isn't for everybody. You could also buy a new bios chip.
- Buy a new laptop.

Chances of the HD bootsector trojan and BIOS trojans are extremely slim but thought i'd cover all the possibilities.

Once you've reformatted or bought a new laptop etc; set up and then run suspicious documents in a sandbox.

I wouldn't hold out hopes for CCTV footage because by the sounds of it they had access to the CCTV to know the window of time when you were out of your room. If they know that much then they can easily delete or have organised it so the cameras weren't working.

When did you book your accommodation and how long have the cameras been "out of action" for?

Stayed in Arts many times during poker tournies past couple years.
It's my fav hotel deco wise but customer service and security has always been a joke there.
For example you don't need room key for elevators for standard floors so any random can get behind your door.
It doesn't really surprise me they don't collaborate with you. They have very incompentent security in the best case and worst case they are involved...
I still feel you.. some random junkie burgled me back in the days and I was super paranoid and scared for long after that.
Also it's getting a bit too scary to be (a high profile) poker player... we Finns should have a local security meeting some time in the near future..

Just got back to my room with my roommate (gray31) and our keys were not working this happened in a span of 45 min. We went to eat came back keys were fine. Changed went to the pool got back and keys werent working. I stayed by room he went down and got a guy to come open our room.

Also during the week got random calls asking for room cleaning but that seems standard.

Will try and get key log and see what happened.

Scary stuff. Think both stars and the hotel have dealt with the situation horribly going off that story, be shocked if a hotel staff member wasn't in on this.

Seems like extremely poor service by the Arts staff. PokerStars could have taken you a bit more seriously too. Does seem likely to be an inside job to me.

The only thing missing from that story is a murder. Amazing stuff.

Reason your head is twisted is because the very people who're supposed to be working with you seem to be working against you. And probably for a very good reason.

And we all know that Stars are loathe to use Police involvement in these scamming attempts, but they shouldn't be allowed to keep this one "in house".

If no money has gone missing then Stars will see this as a "result".

And it really isn't.

Culprits of this need to be brought to justice otherwise this will just continue to keep happening.

I'd also say that this attempted scam has likely been planned for many months and several (if not more) HS players would've been targeted in this huge sting.

Holy **** what a story.

Obv need to nuke your laptop if you still have it. And obv F- for the hotel and like a D for PS for being so lackadaisical.

Hope everything here ends up OK for everyone. Seems there are more victims than just those in OP.

Jeans, have you all looked into the laws down there relating to casino security? I can't imagine if there really were 8 cameras not working that the casino wasn't in violation of some code or law.

like everyone else, sounds like an inside job to me, the timing of getting both your laptops back in your rooms between when you discover they're gone and return to your room after complaining to security is so precise.
