I don't know about all that but it's definitely, definitely overrated. I grew up ~2.5 blocks from it, and most people from the area would do just as well at the local Italian delis that were here. But other shops here make basically an identical product, and there are other places owned by the Sacco family too. I'm not saying it isn't good but it's certainly not unique as far as the food and not reputation.
I'll even tell you why it's overrated: They use the same Formica [very old, very local, and very well-known bakery] bread that nearly all good sub shops in this area use. They also use the same meats and so on from the same food suppliers other reputable sub shops use, even some of the lower end ones. Food-wise the Italian sub is one of the things AC is known for, so people coming in from some other area without great subs (basically everywhere imo) think it's amazing. Of course they want to **** the thing up with mayo and whatnot but that's a different story. Most kids in my area worked in a pizza/sub shop around here back in the day, and basically everyone made subs they way they do, and that's still the case now except a lot of them are offshore a few miles. You can easily get the same sub in a tom of places, and in some of the cases better subs depending on which you're talking about.
The charm of the place has more to do with it being a celebrity stop and its age, as they're really the last of Ducktown. And Formica rolls, which are just awesome, and probably deserve most of the credit White House gets for making subs here what they are. But standing in line there is for the tourists.

Way too true. A classic example of a place everyone says is great because everyone says it's great, but in reality it's just a dime a dozen east coast sub shop. Maybe if you only know Subway it'll seem good.
BTW, when I say dime a dozen, I mean, the typical Md/Pa/NJ subshop is very good, but every town has one.

nuisance,
As a Cali native, i can confirm that NJ beaches suk.
The other town w/ a famous boardwalk [Santa Cruz, CA.]
has way mellower street people, even the winos.
The last bus trip from Scranton to AC [that's how I roll LOL] was a royal pain in the ass. The slot comp I got had 2 finally be ironed out by a security supervisor and a slot supervisor @ the Trop.
Missing the pickup ride home on the tour bus was never scary [I happily recall some long 1-5 stud sessions @ the Trop, w/ the dregs of society.].
NJ Transit buses are awesome, but waiting @ the Philly Greyhound for 4+ hours to get back to Scranton is, well, NOT recommended 4 the faint of heart. I mean, there's a kewl bike shop and a K-mart and a WaWa nearby, but when cabbies in front of the bus depot offer 2 hook u up w/ crack, well......

Remember, we are talking about the streets directly outside the casino being unsafe at night, not some neighborhoods on the other side of the city.

This is exactly what I was trying to get at.

Re: mood in Atlantic City "awful"
Is AC even worth going to these days? Haven't been since '05. More concerned about drinking than gambling. Is the Boardwalk still relatively safe to stumble across at night? Can you still pick up skanks from the Casbah and go to the beach for a quick round of beach volleyball*

The atmosphere as the Trop is usually laid back and fun, but if you go on the weekends prepare to be surrounded by drunk women from bridal parties (not necessarily a bad thing).

Trop has made an effort to clean up and does offer entertainment value in The Quarter. However, if you want to stay in nicer accommodations on the Boardwalk, I'd recommend Caesar's.

This. Prepare to be underwhelmed.

I take my family to AC regularly. The kids love the pool at Borgata, and we take day trips to water parks, Cape May, etc.

I live in San Diego, and visit south jersey 1 month each summer because I have family there and it is ridiculously fun and nice so please stfu.

So true. Most of the state is absolutely gorgeous, but outsiders would never know because all they see is the nastiness directly surrounding NYC, or AC, or what they've seen on the Sopranos. There's a reason that Jersey has the highest number of wealthy and/or celebrity households after NYC and LA. Check out Rumson, Upper Saddle River, Margate, etc, etc.

They will eventually have to give it up for their own survival. Sports betting is the last great hope for AC. More people would then make AC a destination because they could get all their gambling and entertainment in one place.

The Pacific is always f'ing freezing in the USA. The Gulfstream brings warm water up the east coast and great swimming temps from late June through early October.

In Cali we have good ole Mexico throwing whatever the f they want into the ocean.. It sucks.

True. Residents and politicians have actually gotten this right. The Atlantic Coast, specifically in NJ is better than it's ever been in my lifetime. People of all political stripes have banded together on this one and made a difference.

...except for Atlantic City. It's an out of place dump that would be better located near the chemical plants of North Jersey. It's a shame it ended up that way because AC has a rich history and had a lot of potential.
|
Also true. AC, as originally envisioned by those who built the casinos, was just a beautiful dream. The gambling and entertainment are great. The town, not so great. Bottom line is you should feel safe and have a good time at all hours of the day or night on the Boardwalk or over at the Borgata. Hanging around a midtown bus stop at 3 AM, however, is not recommended.

Yeah I live in Scranton myself but I never took a bus trip to A.C. I don't wanna be on time restraint when I am playing poker.
I used to live in Philly back in 96 I know exactly how the Philly Bus Terminal is it's probably the only place you can buy fake weed from and get the cabby's to drive you to Corners in North Philly that they know of, We actually took the bus down and left are stuff in the lockers for a month or so as we couch surfed so we would have to go there everyday or so. You learn to deal with the real degenerates and lowlifes after awhile its not to hard to deal with.

I grew up in NJ. Even then, we knew that AC was the Cambodia of the Eastern Seaboard. Awful place.

I would agree about Cape May. (I used to have a house across the bay in Delaware. Cape May was a nice day trip.)

I grew up in the suburbs of Philly. I'd say 75% of people in south eastern PA make a ritualistic trip down to the Jersey shore every summer. No one knows why, they just do it.
