We already booked at the Taj, but I'm having doubts as to if I should even visit AC at all. I wanted to play some poker there, and visit a few of the casino's, but with all the negativity towards AC on these forums, I don't know If I'm to believe everything, it seems as if AC is a total run-down slum where we're gonna be mugged on each corner, and get our rental car jacked.
How much of this negative press is actually worth taking into account? I know about the murder at the Taj parking earlier this year, but I would assume security was ramped up a bit there now, no?

The Taj is not the place for a one night stay with your wife. The Borgata, on the other hand, is a great place for both gambling and entertainment. Cancel Taj and rebook, you'll be happy you did.

You should not cancel your plans. AC can be enjoyable. If it is in your budget, stay at the Borgata instead. If not, you will be fine at the Taj. But don't wander around the city. Stay in the casinos and if you have to walk outside (especially at night) stay on the boardwalk.

I think one night in AC is definitely worth it on your trip. The weather in the AC area is usually very nice in September. As for where to stay, I would say a it depends on where else you are going on your trip.
If you are already visiting a "beach" and are interested in AC more for the poker and gaming, then I would highly recommend switching your reservation to the Borgata or for slightly less $$, to Harrah's which is next door and has had alot of renovations lately.
If you actually want a beach stay with the boardwalk and the gritty history of AC, then I would stay at Caesars. It has a very nice new shopping and dining pier as well as being in walking distance to the outlet shops at The Walk.
All that being said, the Taj is fine and has had alot of renovations recently as well. Try to make sure your room is in the "new" tower.
Finally, if you are going to play poker in AC, you have to stop in at the poker room at Borgata.

Re: mood in Atlantic City "awful"
AC blew it. They had the lock on gambling on the East Coast and never built an infrastructure like Vegas.

short-sighted
A.C. is going to have an even bigger problem with revenues as DE and PA open up table games (DE already has them open in 2 of its 3 racinos)
most of the players from the D.C. and Baltimore Metro areas are now saving gas, tolls and time by just stopping in DE for some gaming
the only way that A.C. can survive is to continue to expand into entertainment and shopping and become a destination resort for the shore
the trash from North Jersey and N.Y. will always come down to the Jersey Shore to gamble but a lot of players are taking the money elsewhere
for example, i am taking off from work on Thursday and playing some poker and shooting some craps; i live in South Jersey about 60 miles from A.C.; i would usually go to Bally's and play during the week; this week i am going to Delaware Park which is less than 50 miles away from my home
it will only get worse for A.C. this fall and coming winter

We booked the Chairman Tower, no idea if it is the newest tbh.
The reason we chose the Taj over the Borgata, is because it is right on the boardwalk. But seeing as I hear mostly good things about the Borgata, I'm gonna take it up with the missus

Sadly enough, a lot of people who post here only say negative things. I don't know why. Wish that they wouldn't.
It is also fashionable on these forums to cheerlead for the Borgata and denigrate all other properties. Again, I don't know why.
What I do know, having played several days a week for the past 2+ years here, is that the Boardwalk isn't anywhere near as bad as a lot of folk make it out to be.
Watch out for the seagulls (the most voracious beggars on the planet) and you'll be fine. Throwing them food only encourages them - and brings in more - so unless you want to be surrounded by an ever growing flock of hungry birds, feed them with caution.
Other than that, you'll be fine. The Boarwalk is as safe as anyplace I've been - even at night I've never felt endangered.
The Chairman's tower is the newest, and by all accounts has great rooms. I haven't personally seen it - but others who have stayed there and at the Borgata say that the rooms at the Chairman's tower are even better.
The Borgata is the ritziest of the properties in AC - also the most expensive. Book accordingly. Once there, the only place one can walk to is Harrah's next door. Stay at the Taj, and you have the entire beach and boardwalk.
Lots of great restraunts all over the city, if you want specific recommendations please let us know what sort of food and price range you're looking for.
There are some other touristy things to do as well. An aquarium, a small history museum, an art exhibit, a Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum - most are on the boardwalk, all are an easy jitney (local bus) ride apart. There is also the lighthouse.
Come on down and have a great time.

+1 for enjoying AC.
From some of the posts on here you'd think it's a warzone outside the Borgata poker room. Idiots.
Spending a day or two there can be a great time. Have yourself a nice dinner, some drinks, gamble a little and go in peace.

The Chairman Tower is the new tower with very nice amenities ; just stay at the Taj on the boardwalk like you initially planned. Make a trip (10 min) over to Borgata for some poker. You will have a good time.
BTW the poker room at the Taj is the second largest in AC after Borgata.
