When it does finally return, I just hope the rake structure and other possible "fees" associated w the government dont make it unprofitable to play. The rec player wont care, as they lose everything amyway. But the decent to good players who actually profit from it may not have nearly as much of a reason to play anymore.

I would love option #2, but we are pretty much guaranteed option number 1 at least!
Outcome 1 is certainly better than nothing, but it will still be rough going at first until more states join up, since I expect that a significant portion of online pros who haven't already left the country will pack up and move to one of the participating states, and you end up with 50 states worth of pros fighting over 5 states worth of fish. Still beats the current status quo though I imagine, and obviously the games will improve as more states come onboard.

Obviously I think we'd all prefer outcome 2, but at this point I'll take what I can get.

Ok, set an o/u on your question and we'll bet.

Also, can someone more knowledgeable speculate on whether Missouri or Illinois would be likely to jump on board early? I live on the border, so I only need to hit one out of two!

Missouri seems decently likely, given the prevalence of casino gambling here, but we do have an awful lot of conservative rural areas between St. Louis and Kansas City. Illinois is less gambling-friendly from what I understand, but I don't know much about it.

I'm not sure about Missouri. I think there is a thread around the forums somewhere that discusses this exact topic state by state.

I remember seeing something somewhere that Illinois is one of a handful of states that expressly prohibits internet gaming. That is, it's in the Illinois statutes or something.

I may have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm generally ill-informed, lol.

Might be a bad bet since Nevada is getting ready to issues online poker licenses next month. I would agree that FTP pays out before Federal legislation is passed though.

I don't quite see how FTP will pay this money back. Hate to say it, but it's gone.

Found it here, thanks. Missouri seems like it has a better chance than most of making it in.

This has 5 states legalizing online poker sites and keeping all the operator fees.

This has 30+ states legalizing online poker sites and sending a chunk of operator fees to the feds...forever!

Why would 6+ times as many states want a scheme that would mean significantly less revenue? And how long until Congress decides they need a bigger chunk of the pie?

Also, if 30+ states want to legalize online poker sites, what is the delay?

Since you obviously haven't read anything about the intra vs interstate topics that have been discussed here I will give you a brief explanation. More states would go with the federal root since it would be easier for them to do so. Also many states could not support online poker by themselves and would need to make pacts with other states anyways to share player pools. With the fed plan all that states would have the option to opt out but would automatically be opted in. Also if states want to do their own thing they would need to spend the time and money with coming up with their own gaming board to regulate it. Overall it is much easier for states just to be part of a federal plan and get a smaller piece from a larger pie then try and do it on their own.

Where's the scenario where states pass intrastate poker, then, in the words of MGM CEO, "state, after state, after state, after state" join in with those states like the powerball lottery??

years down the road. The fastest and best option is a Federal bill. The powerball option is something that would take a lot longer to happen.

Can you explain why Nevada couldn't be running mid-year and other states join in by late 2012/early 2013 then immediately be able play on Nevada sites? You may be right, but I don't see what's so unrealistic about this.

Nevada will be running sometime this year, some say by the spring/summer. The reason you won't see other states jumping in right away is since states normally move slow as hell with something like this. There is no big push really from anyone to do intrastate and until you get some states doing it no other ones will be in a rush to do it. I haven't read a single thing yet about a state wanting to pool players yet and until the states see how much they are missing out they aren't going to make it a priority to get it done. After you see 4 states or so pool players and if there isn't a federal bill in place yet then you will state to see a big push from other states to join in.

This is all speculation and pretty vague and does nothing to quash the notion that states could quickly powerball onto Nevada's sites.

Not sure if you watched the vid this thread is based on but the MGM CEO says exactly that, "state, after state, after state, after state" will fall in line powerball style if no federal legislation is passed.

These states would have to create/agree to legislation and then create/agree to a compact...a federal bill will make the issue yes/no to all 50 states immediately. Legislation moves at a snail's pace. Federal bill all they have to do is jump on the piggy back and make revenue.

That's not exactly STATES talking about doing it that is a CEO of a company saying it will happen. Yes it will happen but not as fast as everyone is making it seem.
